In the Norwegian campaign, Admiral Hipper was rammed and damaged by the destroyer HMS Glowworm, which emerged from a smoke screen at close range but was ultimately sunk by Admiral Hipper.
Admiral Hipper subsequently served as a training ship in the Baltic Sea where she helped protect and evacuate the retreating German troops and refugees holded up in East Prussia, in what became the largest maritime evacuation in history.
Admiral Hipper in 1939, note the new Atlantic bow was not yet installed.

The Germans defended their actions by claiming they were protecting Norway from an Allied occupation when in fact they became the occupying army.
The garrison was nowhere near fully manned, the warning shots for reinforcements were not heeded, German gliders were not identified, two of the four AA guns jammed, and the camouflage netting on the guns caught fire and the smoke obscured the gun periscopes.
The Germans took advantage of this confused mass retreat by bombing civilian cities, which in turn forced them to flee using the same roads that the Allied armies were using.

The Hipper engaged the destroyers HMS Onslow, Orwell, and Achates (the latter sank), before coming under fire from cruisers HMS Sheffield and Jamaica, which scored three hits, one below the waterline, forcing the Hipper to retire.
The Hipper spent the rest of the war in the Baltic, and was in company with the Wilhelm Gustloff when that ship was sunk with the loss of thousands of lives on January 30, 1945.
Berthed at Kiel from February 2, Admiral Hipper was sunk at dock in the last sortie flown by RAF Bomber Command on May 3, and was broken up later that year.

Meisel) about 700 miles west of Cape Finisterre, but the action was inconclusive, the German cruiser was driven off by HMS Berwick, which was hit twice and only two ships in the convoy had been damaged.
The German crew members from the Merchant Navy had refused to scuttle their vessel, so the cruiser was able to send a boarding party on board, which sailed the ship to Bermuda.

In June, the code-breakers at Bletchley Park were reading German naval Enigma traffic with remarkable speed and in the aftermath of the sinking of the Bismarck the Admiralty turned its attention to German supply ships stationed in the Atlantic.
Not only did it deny the Germans vital oil supplies for their U-boats, but also important Enigma material was found where it had fallen behind a filing cabinet in the wireless room.

All our guns were firing, but our torpedoes which we fired missed the Hipper although they went very close to her.
He must have been a very brave man as the ship was sinking and men were jumping over the side, but he kept that gun going for quite a time.
