THE '96 TOKYO INTERNATIONAL PROVERB FORUM
Although the identification of traditional texts as proverbs and their arrangement in collections of various types are of paramount importance, proverb scholars have always known that the interpretation of their use in oral or written speech acts is of equal significance.
This will be followed by comments regarding such matters as the definition of proverbs, the concept of "proverbiality", the intriguing aspects of empirical proverb research, the semiotic and linguistic approaches to the proverb, the question of the meaning of proverbs, and the use and function of proverbs in the social context.
Proverbs in traditional Korean society differ from those of western societies, in that they are a cultural heritage of the lower class of society and therefore they are not shared by the upper class, who had for their cultural vehicle the "sijo" poetry, the three-lined, forty-five syllabled form of vernacular language.

 PROVERBS IN SELECTED CHINESE NOVELS
Proverbs with only three words exist only in the form of two separate lines and are very rare.
Very often, proverbs are introduced in the text by a special short formula, such as "from old times, it is said..." or "truly, it is...", but not all proverbs are introduced.
When a proverb is found more than once in the same novel, it is used more than once when any of the code data deviate concerning codes 9 to 18 or 19 to 22.

Proverbs - Greek and English Proverbs, Dr. Karagiorgos
A proverb is a terse didactic statement that is current in tradition or, as an epigram says, ''the wisdom of many and the wit of one''.
A proverb is a short verse or prose sentence that expresses vividly and often allegorically a wise opinion, an ascertainment, an advice, and which is repeated in everyday conversation as an argument or example.
Although proverbs lost a lot of their reputation in the Age of Enlightenment as a result of their overwhelmingly medieval origin, they were by no means neglected by classical authors such as Lessing, Schiller and Goethe.

Proverbs and Phrases of Biblical Origin
However, proverbs and phrases of biblical origin are often used, knowingly or unknowingly, in modern speech (ex: face-to-face or daily bread), especially with the rising of interest in the Bible after the publication of books such as Brown's The Da Vinci Code.
After some research and careful reading of the Scriptures in English, German, and Russian, I figured out that the proverbs and phrases which come from the Bible are sometimes not identical in their translation in the different languages.
Russian proverbs and often-used phrases from the Bible contain some old Slavic words, which are not understandable to modern Russian people, except in the context of the full proverb and may be absolutely unknown to non-Russian translators.

The German proverb is thus well established by the end of the 16th century, and it appears with considerable frequency in later collections and literary works of the German language right up to the present day.
Mathesius connects this metaphorical proverb with a second text that reiterates the proverbial wisdom of heredity: "Der apffel felt nicht weyt vom baum / vnd das kalb gereth gewoenigklich nach der kue" (The apple does not fall far from the tree, and the calf usually resembles the cow).

The book is particularly useful for someone like me who speaks very limited German in that it gives the German verse, followed by an English translation, and in some cases, a literal tranlation.
My only slight disappointment is that I wish there were more poems and less proverbs but overall, I really like this little book.
