Wisconsin Senator Clarence Pierce, serving from 1894-1898, also was a Wisconsin assemblyman in 1890-1894.
She reports, “ The days of the thriving Germania Company colony were over, but Germania was still a bustling town with store, mill and creamery when Loretta Wagner married Stuart Friedrichs, and they became proprietors of the Germania Hotel and Tavern.
For years, she said, the hunters told and retold the story of how they left Germania in a snow storm and were stranded in drifts outside of town.

L.E. Leighton, an early miller, is honored in memory by Leighton Avenue, the road leading to the dam at the 2,400 acre Germania Wildlife area, established in 1959.
The hotel-tavern, with its double-deck veranda along the side and the dance hall Stuart’s father had built behind it, was about halfway between the two churches, west of the big Hartwell house (that also had been a hotel in its time) and a block or so east of the 14 room Pierce family home.
William Friedrichs died in 1931, shortly after Stuart and Loretta were married, and for the next 31 years - with Sadie’s help until she died in 1960 - Loretta and Stuart kept the bar open, meals on the table, wood stoves stoked, and chamber pots emptied.

Germania was founded by Rolf W. Reisgies as a one-man basement operation on December 1, 1973, in Madison, Wisconsin.
The first 36 units were built in 1974 by part-time workers and assembled by a group of high school kids in an old pre-World War II airplane manufacturing facility outside Madison.
In early ’75, word of the unit and Germania began to spread on the West Coast.

Currently Rosy-Lane is milking 580 cows in a double eight parallel Germania parlor which is averaging a 103 lb tank average with a 3.8% butterfat and 3.07% protein.

The effigy mound, again discovered in the early spring, is a serpent mound 100 yards long with the bends consistent with the major solar orientations (mid-summer sunrise, mid-winter sunrise, and the corresponding sunsets).

Description: Situated on the terraces above the Mecan River is Germania Wet Prairie, a diverse wet to wet-mesic prairie with a showy flora and some sedge meadow and fen affinities.
Germania Wet Prairie is owned by the DNR and was designated a State Natural Area in 2002.
