Topic: Germania (book)

Germania - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dating back to the Roman era, Germania was the Latin name for a geographical area that stretched from the west bank of the Rhine to a vaguely-defined eastern frontier with the forest and steppe regions of modern Russia and Ukraine.
Germania was defined by Rome as having two regions: 'the inner Germania', west and south of the Rhine, occupied by the Romans, and 'the free Germania' east of the Rhine.
The occupied Germania was divided into two provinces: Germania Inferior (approximately corresponding to the southern part of the present-day Low Countries) and Germania Superior (approximately corresponding to present-day Switzerland and Alsace).

The fifth book contains—as a prelude to the account of Titus's suppression of the Great Jewish Revolt—a short ethnographic survey of the ancient Jews and is an invaluable record of the educated Romans' attitude towards that people.
Book 6 ends with the death of Tiberius and books 7-12 presumably covered the reigns of Caligula and Claudius.

Although the prominent position Sweden had in that time is today seen as a rather lucky coincident by historians, these rumors were seen as gross slander on the Swedish honor and the country's ability to conduct warfare, and Scheferrus felt they had to be condemned by an accurate view of the Saamis.
The book was publicized in late 1673 and quickly translated to French, German, English, and other languages (though not to Swedish until 1956).
However, an adapted and abridged version was quickly publicized in the Netherlands and Germany, where chapters on their difficult living conditions, topography, and the environment had been replaced by made-up stories of magic, sorcery, drums and heathenism.

While Tacitus may have some issues to deal with as a historians, considering that his view of Agricola's career may be a little biased due to the fact that he's pretty much eulogizing his father-in-law, he does, however, offer an interesting insight into frontier life and Roman military institutions.
Germania is more interesting than Agricola and provides rich insights into the customs of various Germanic tribes during first century AD.
