The portrait is of Hern Blumensaat, the king's high official in the military Kabinett and we believe it was painted in 1915 because it came along with a wonderful state portrait in the frame of the Order of the Black Eagle that was presented to him directly from Kaiser Wilhelm, himself.
Here in all her glory is Germania, symbol of Germany’s proud past; from Hermann’s victory, to the march in review of the legions of the Wehrmacht.
The beautiful depiction of Germania is very impressive as she holds aloft the wreathed symbol of this organization.

Fritz Hirschberger: "The Fifth Horseman" - Seduction of Germania
Germania was the ancient name for the area inhabited by the Germanic tribes, as described by the Roman Historian Tacitus in his book, Germania.
In Hirschberger's The Seduction of Germania, Germania is depicted as Eve in the Garden of Eden, who has presumably given a can of Zyklon B gas to Adam, dressed in SS Uniform at the instigation of the snake, undoubtedly symbolizing Hitler.
The image in the painting is based on traditional Christian icons and Medieval painting of "The Temptation of Adam," the story of "original sin" in the Christian Bible, when Eve was seduced by the serpent to give Adam the apple.

Encyclopedia :: encyclopedia : Digital painting   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Digital painting is an emerging artform in which traditional painting techniques such as watercolor, oils, impasto, etc. are applied using digital tools by means of a computer, a digitizing tablet and stylus, and software.
Digital painting differs from other forms of digital art and computer-generated art, in particular, in that it does not involve the computer rendering from a model.
Digital painting software such as Corel Painter, Studio Artist, Adobe Photoshop, Jasc Paint Shop Pro, ArtRage, and openCanvas give artists a similar environment to a physical painter: a canvas, painting tools, mixing palettes, and a multitude of color options.

As a young impetuous mind even initially involved in the fierce controversies of new arising artistic groups and movements of the thirties, he was one of the signers of the manifesto of „Pittori Moderni della Realtà“ published in 1947, in which there was taken an openly stand against the abstractionism of modern arts.
In these paintings he not only succeeded in a deep philosophical understanding of the problems of his own time, but also a very authentic reflection of his visionary inner self that is filled both with hope and despair.

The two female figures were then altered to represent Italia and Germania in order to express the close connection between north and the south, as Overbeck and his group - Germans living in Rome - imagined it to be.

This painting was inspired by the novel and painting Shulamit and Mary by Franz Pforr.
In his painting Pforr separates the Italian and the German worlds, the Old and the New Testament, while Overbeck eliminates the division and creates a sisterly unity.
Rightly the title was changed five years later to Italia and Germania, for the clothes, the laurel and myrtle wreaths and of course the different landscapes and houses make it very evident what is meant.

Genre paintings, in particular those of interior scenes, focus on domestic life and separate what society regarded as 'typical' activities from the many daily tasks.
These, however, are not mere documentations of life in the home, but rather the representation of moral archetypes and the socially determined role of women, who are portrayed sewing, embroidering, peeling fruit, combing children' hair, plucking chickens or cleaning fish.
The portrayed scenes of family, which are associated, in the broadest sense, with care and security, have, on the one hand, a warm and at times bourgeois character and, thorough their aesthetic quality, a cool, sterile and detached character on the other.
