It is under the name of germanwings, the name of a former competitor of Lufthansa's whose name rights Lufthansa had bought up upon its insolvency in 1990, that Eurowings Luftverkehrs AG is now to enter the low-cost segment.
According to information issued by germanwings, the carrier is expecting to expand rapidly and wants to operate a single-type fleet of A319's.
germanwings will not be hampered by Lufthansa's expensive wage agreements and the restrictive scope clauses (upper limits on capacity agreed with the unions) which apply, for example, to subsidiary Lufthansa CityLine, also based in Cologne, and impose an upper limit of 70 passengers per aircraft on normal flights.

Low-cost airline Germanwings, part of Lufthansa, made its first profit this year as sales rose 60 percent, and plans to expand with a new hub and extra planes next year, the company said on Thursday.
Germanwings, which was set up in 2002, said its supervisory board had approved an order for three new Airbus aircraft, which will be placed in the first weeks of the new year.
Germanwings, which flies from Cologne/Bonn and Stuttgart airports, said it planned to open a third hub in Germany and to carry more than 5 million passengers in 2005.

Germanwings has chosen a new base at Berlin Schönefeld airport as part of its ambitious plans for growth.
Speaking at the opening of the ITB tourism fair in Berlin, Germanwings chairman Dr Joachim Klein commented that the initial schedule in Berlin is almost as big as it was in Cologne/Bonn two and a half years ago.
Last year, 3.5 million passengers flew with Germanwings (44 per cent up on 2003), turnover was up 65 per cent (from 150m to 247m euros), and with average loads of over 82 per cent over the year the attractive range of fares proved to be very popular.

Aleegedly not exactly their fault but the ladies at the gate didn't make any announcement before the planned take-off time, which was rather annoying, especially that we could see them getting nervous too.
And I had hoped they would choose Berlin as their second hub after CGN (being Polish from Poznan, Berlin is close enough to use as our point of departure).
Actually Germanwings is owned by Lufthansa itself and is mainly set up to compete against the other 2 no-frills airlines recently starting up:HLX and AB.

Germanwings, part of the Lufthansa group, increased first-half sales 60 percent to EUR163 million (USD$198 million) on rising demand for low-cost travel, it said on Wednesday.

Germanwings is to test the Boeing 717 in the European low-cost environment through a wet-lease agreement with Spanish carrier Aerolineas de Baleares (AeBal), in a move that could lead to its parent, Eurowings, acquiring the type.

Germanwings is describing the B717 as "extremely reliable" and seems to be thrilled by the overall-performance.

Lufthansa Cargo, the German airline's freight subsidiary, and low-cost air carrier Germanwings both announced price increases after the cost of crude oil reached a record 60-dollars a barrel.
