Digimorph - Gerrhosaurus nigrolineatus (black-lined plated lizard)
Gerrhosaurus is a member of Scleroglossa (see also Varanus, Lanthanotus), one of the two major squamate clades (the other being Iguania, e.g., Ctenosaura, Phrynosoma).
Within Scleroglossa, Gerrhosaurus resides in Gerrhosauridae (see also Gerrhosaurus major and Tracheloptychus petersi), the hypothesized sister taxon to Cordylidae.
The cranial osteoderms in this group have long hampered the study of their cranial bones, and it is difficult to remove the osteoderms that actually coossify with the dorsal cranial bones without damaging the skull.

PLATED LIZARDS (Gerrhosauridae): Angolosaurus, Cordylosaurus, Tetradactylus, Tracheloptychus
There is a transparent "window" in the lower eyelid, an adaptation that (again) is sometimes found in skinks, and the occasional lacertid.
In scalation it differs from the other Gerrhosauridae in lacking the shields anterior to the frontal shield on the head.
Any eggs laid thereafter should be removed as they tend to dry out quickly: the young should be raised individually as they are quite aggressive towards one another.

Variation: Males and females are similar, but males have more blue coloring on the body.
Additional Comments: The family Gerrhosauridae has been placed within the Cordylidae 9as a subfamily) for much of the 20th century.
Work conducted in the 1990s by South African herpetologists has resulted in reestablishing the plated lizards in their own family.

If the new taxon is correctly attributed to the Cordylidae, it constitutes a significant temporal and geographic range extension for the clade since cordylids have no definite representatives in the fossil record and extant forms are restricted to the sub-Saharan portion of mainland Africa.
This new record also indicates that cordylids, after their occurrence in the Maastrichtian, became extinct on Madagascar, leaving only zonosaurine Gerrhosauridae as extant representatives of Cordyliformes on the island.
Finally, we document here the observation that lizards appear to have been much less speciose than snakes in Late Cretaceous faunas of Gondwana, whereas the reverse is true in Laurasia.

A second group is formed by the few American Xantusiidae, the numerous American Tejidae, and the, burrowing, degraded American and African A mphisbaenidae.
A third group comprises the cosmopolitan Scincidae, the African and Malagasy Gerrhosauridae which in various features remind us of the Anguidae, and the African and Eurasian Lacertidae which are the highest members of this group.
Andytropidae and perhaps also Dibamidae may be degraded Scincoids.

Tracheloptychus petersi lies within the clade Gerrhosauridae, containing a variety of SubSaharan African and Malagasy lizards with platelike dorsal scales and certain distinctive cranial features.
Gerrhosauridae itself ultimately belongs to the Scincomorpha and then to the Scleroglossa.
Though its extant sister clade, Cordylidae, has been fairly well-studied morphologically, Gerrhosauridae has been the subject of few anatomical analyses, with the notable exception of an excellent description of the gross anatomy of the heads of various members of the clade Gerrhosaurus [2, 1].
