Gerry Conway - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
He is best known for his runs on Amazing Spider-Man in the 1970s (which included the death of Gwen Stacy) and on Justice League of America in the 1970s and 1980s (which included the co-creation of the atomic-powered superhero Firestorm).
While praised for having had such talent that he was recognized at such a young age, he has also been criticized for not having had the maturity (at the time) to properly develop Gwen Stacy's character and thus deciding to kill her off.

He is best known for co-creating The Punisher (with Ross Andru) and the atomic-powered superhero Firestorm (with Al Milgrom) as well as for long runs on Amazing Spider-Man in the 1970s (which included the death of Gwen Stacy) and on Justice League of America in the 1970s and 1980s.
Conway moved into television writing in the 1980s, starting with Matlock and Jake and the Fatman.

Gerry Conway - The Official Jethro Tull Website
Gerry was born in King's Lynn, Norfolk, England on the 11th September 1947.
The rhythm section of Fotheringay was hired by Cat Stevens, and Gerry went on to be "Steve's" regular drummer from the "Teaser and the Firecat" album, until the official and regrettably permanent retirement of Cat Stevens in 1975.
Gerry toured with the band in that year and has subsequently played on Tull tracks from time to time, notably on the "Crest of a Knave" album in 1987 and the single, "Part of the Machine" in 1988.

Conway in conjunction with Andru’s art brought a sense of psyche in peril that perhaps was only rivaled by Gil Kane’s work on the book in capturing the anguish and border of madness that makes up the true rouges of the Spiderman gallery.
Conway's big minus with me (apart from the bad villains, which may be laid at Andru's door as well) was that I don't think he was that good at soap opera dynamics, with the possible exception of Mary Jane, whom he essentially reinvented.
Conway had a unique approach to a comic about a werewolf, in that the werewolf could think in a limited fashion, so that his thought-balloons were filled with all sorts of stream-of-consciousness ramblings.

TwoMorrows Publishing - Alter Ego #14 - Gerry Conway Interview
GERRY CONWAY: My recollection of events from the mid-'70s is a bit vague, at least when it comes to the details of why I did things a certain way in a certain issue.
CONWAY: In the '70s, when I was writing comics at DC and Marvel, I made it a practice to sketch my own ideas for the costumes of new characters-heroes and villains-which I offered to the artists as a crude suggestion representing the image I had in mind.
CONWAY: Steel was intended to be a tip of the hat to the original Captain America.

In an introduction to this compilation of a follow-up storyline, Conway wryly comments that the rumor got around that he had gone berserk and turned in a "Death of Gwen Stacy" script while editor and Spider-Man creator Stan Lee was out of town, and that Stan Lee never would have approved such a vile deed.
Conway assures us that Stan had approved the whole thing before they went through with it, but apparently those wide-eyed Spider-Fans preferred not to believe that the man who had written all those great Spider-Man stories in the 60s could ever be an accessory to the murder of Spidey's girlfriend.
Considering that she had been declared dead and buried in a nice cemetery with a tombstone marking the spot, this was going to take considerable ingenuity unless (as a co-worker suggested) they wanted to bring her back as a zombie or some such.

Even as a toddler in north London, Gerry Conway wanted to be a drummer: in fact, he got his first drumkit at the age of 11.
After six years touring the world with Stevens, Gerry found himself back in London and in demand as a session man. However, in 1979 he went to live in the USA for a few years, working mainly with Jerry Donahue.
During the 1980s, Gerry returned to the UK and spent a year or so on the road with Jethro Tull.

Most "Implosion" victims didn't get a second chance, but in Firestorm's case, a guest appearance with Superman led to that venerable character sponsoring him as a member of The Justice League of America (which by then had become a haven for superheroes without series of their own).
The fact that Conway was writing the JLA comic at the time probably had something to do with Firestorm joining.

Conway's problem was he didn't seem to have any idea how to write a uniquely "Superman" story.
Conway's dialogue had Clark thinking that the reason he had never fully commited to Lois Lane was that he had thought himself to be an alien from a different planet.
Back on topic: I admit that I like 301 (possibly the best Superman issue Conway did--although his contributions to the fictitious tabloid editions were respectable--but then he didn't have to adhere to continuity), but I think the strength of 301 is in Solomon Grundy (and not Superman).

The monthly series, written initially by Conway and drawn mainly by Pat Broderick and Rafael Kayanan, slowly developed the lives of Raymond and Stein, as the teenager struggled with high school and moved towards graduation and the scientist found a life outside the lab.
The series also tried to create a sense of fun, something that Conway felt was missing during his years writing Spider-Man; the banter between Ronnie Raymond and Martin Stein contributed to this.
In 1986, Conway abruptly left the series, and John Ostrander (with artist Joe Brozowski) took over the reins.
