After 40 years in the music industry Gerry Marsden is to play his first-ever gig by the Mersey - at a stage just yards from where the ferry departs.

On January 22nd 1963, Gerry and the Pacemakers travelled from Liverpool to London to record the song, as Marsden recalled: "We were sat in the back of a freezing van for 10 hours in the worst weather you can imagine.
Freddie Marsden was born in the working-class Dingle area of Liverpool in 1940 and his brother, Gerry, followed two years later.
Gerry was our main singer, and all the singing and the smoking battered his voice.

Despite this early success, Gerry and the Pacemakers never had another number one single in the U.S. Gerry Marsden began writing most of their own songs, including "It's All Right", "I'm the One", and "Ferry Cross the Mersey", as well as their first and biggest U.S. hit, "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying".
Marsden died 9 December 2006, in Southport, at the age of sixty six.
