Mercier needn't have worried; the press release for Homeland, opening at the Abbey Theatre next week, ends where the journey of his central character, Gerry Newman, begins.
The sort of life Gerry lives, it suggests, is one mired in the wheeling and dealing of the new Ireland - an Ireland which Gerry, for some reason, has been forced to leave, and to which he feels compelled to return for one more visit.
Mercier's smiling again; though the words are spat out like bullets, there's no note of aggression to his questions.

Gerry | Reviews | Guardian Unlimited Film
Gerry is actually a riveting companion-piece to Elephant, and together they make up a remarkable career triumph for Van Sant after the soupy drama Good Will Hunting and Finding Forrester, his woeful flirtations with the commercial mainstream.
There is a hint of Mercier and Camier in the Gerrys' numbed, uncomprehending anxiety, or even a touch of Laurel and Hardy, doggedly pumping their two-handed rail platform along the bare track.
Gerry requires a leap of faith and an investment of attention: but with its fascination and weird exhilaration it handsomely repays both.

Honoré Mercier (October 15, 1840 – October 30, 1894), was Liberal Premier of Quebec from January 27, 1887, to December 21, 1891.
With his strong nationalist stance, Mercier was very much a precursor of later nationalist Premiers in future decades who confronted the federal government and tried to win more power for Quebec.
Lyon's government was defeated in the 1981 election, although Mercier successfully sought re-election in the safe Tory seat of St. Norbert rather than in the marginal Osborne riding.

Mercier plays fast and loose with the myth, using it mostly as a thematic rather than a structural reference.
Though at first sceptical of Gerry’s mythmaking abilities, the man is convinced and converted and drags Gerry off to celebrate with him.
As Gerry is knocked from place to place he meets characters who are funny, tragic and downright scary, but given the timeframe of the play they’re left as ciphers which are wonderfully acted but insubstantial.

She told that she was poor, alone with a child, abused by her husband, dying of cancer, and that her purse, with her last $150.00 inside, was stolen, along with a bus ticket for her little boy to go to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where someone there would care for him after her death.
In 1987, Donna Mercier had falsely accused her then lover, Kenneth Sylvia, and had him charged with rape and theft.

It is 15 years since Sands, the 27-year-old leader of IRA prisoners in Belfast's Long Kesh Prison who was elected to the British Parliament while behind bars, became the first of 10 prisoners to die of self-imposed hunger, protesting the Thatcher government's treatment of IRA inmates as criminal, not political, prisoners.
In the section "A Day in my life", Bobby tells us about the routine harrassment that the Republican prisoners would have to endure, the sheer brutality and naked harshness of their oppressors who in their cruelty and naivety could not possibly understand what it was that the prisoners were going through.
Gerry Adams summed it up brilliantly when he said Bobby Sands lives in these pages.
