 Art in America: British Arts On Alert - British Arts Council chairman Gerry Robinson announces - closer monitoring of ...
Robinson, a businessman and chairman of the Granada Leisure group, warned recently that the annual allocation of Arts Council cash, which he pegged at around 400 million [pound sterling] ($664 million), would be closely watched for the next three to five years and any "tired practices" rooted out.
Robinson warned the Royal Opera House (presently mired in controversy over its future) and other arts organizations that bad management would not be tolerated, and he insisted that the arts be made more broadly accessible (he advocates free museum admission, for example).
Robinson wants the Council to be the national strategic body for the arts, with most funding decisions transferred to the 10 regional arts boards.

Robinson, however, has several other claims on a working week that starts with the Monday evening flight from his native Co. Donegal in Ireland, where he lives with second wife Heather and their two young children, and ends with the 7.30pm return on Thursdays.
Robinson has also been lined up to replace Sir John Harvey-Jones in the BBC series Troubleshooter, though when the programme will be broadcast is unclear.
