P.E.G (Gerry) Sayer - First British Jet Pilot
Sayer's first actual flight in the E28/39 consisted of some short hops of between 100 and 200 yards at Hucclecote on the 7th April 1941 while the aircraft was still fitted with its first W1X (Taxy only) engine.
Sayer was killed flying a Typhoon in 1942 on a visit to RAF Acklington in Northumberland.
The cause of the accident was never determined but it is thought that he collided in the clouds with the other aircraft he was flying with.

Sayer's 1998 memoir was hooked to a concept so instantly intriguing, the film rights were bought before the book was finished: an 18-year-old travels to the US to busk on the streets with her jazz drumming dad.
Sayer stays with her mother through all the rages and beatings, and the many times the two of them (plus, soon, infant brother) flee for women's refuges, only to return whenever Hakim tracks the mother down at some local drinking hole.
Sayer calls this sanctuary Bayside Free School, which may or may not have been St Kilda Alternative School, and treats it as the towrope to drag her to a new life, to the life she leads now.

Sayer offers vivid and loving treatment of the years the two of them spent working the streets of New York and New Orleans, the physical strain and euphoric rush of nightly shows, dodging cops, living on nothing and growing up wild.
It is to Sayer's credit that she seems to write the story the way it happened, untainted with hindsight and reflection.
What comes through most strongly in Sayer's writing is her capacity for joy in everything she experiences, whether living with a leaky roof in a New Orleans winter or finding steady work (she eventually joined the Bill Evans Dance Company) and love in New York.

 Sir Frank Whittle
Whittle ensured that Britain was the first to enter the jet age when, on May 15 1941, the jet-propelled Gloster-Whittle E 28/39 flew successfully from Cranwell.
During 10 hours of flying over the next few days, the experimental aircraft - flown by the test pilot Gerry Sayer - achieved a top speed of 370 mph at 25,000 ft. This was faster than the Spitfire, or any other conventional propeller-driven machine.
Although this was a moment of triumph for Whittle, it was tinged with some bitterness, for he had had to overcome years of obstruction from the authorities, lack of funding for and faith in his brilliant ideas.

Velocity by Mandy Sayer - Book reviews with Robin Osborne - The Northern Rivers Echo Newspaper, Lismore
This high-energy (as the title suggests) follow-up to Mandy Sayer's autobiographical Dreamtime Alice predates that memoir by tracing her childhood and early adolescence with a struggling mother and absent father, drummer Gerry Sayer, whom she would accompany on the American trip recounted in the second phase of her life story.
At the age of three the child was given her first taste of beer, typifying the unusual upbringing that lasted until 1979 when Sayer completed high school, left home, such as it was, and moved from Melbourne to Sydney to be closer to the father she had missed for many years.
In her mid-teens, Sayer took up with an arty crowd and began to build a life that has seen her become the successful author of four novels and now one of the more interesting accounts of life beyond the Australian dream.
