Gertrude and her mother gave them a tract of land called Fosse on which they built a monastery.
After the death of Itta in 652, Gertrude entrusted the interior management of her monastery to a few pious nuns, and appointed some capable monks to attend to the outer affairs, in order that she might gain more time for the study of Holy Scripture, which she almost knew by heart.
Gertrude is generally represented as an abbess, with rats and mice at her feet or running up her cloak or pastoral staff.

 Collegiale Sainte-Gertrude, Nivelles
The former Collégiale Sainte-Gertrude, a collegiate church dedicated in 1046 in the presence of the German emperor Heinrich III and which dominates the Grand-Place of Nivelles, is one of the most sumptuous examples of Romanesque architecture in Belgium.
The origin of the church, built in Ottoman Romanesque style, was the monastic Church of Saint-Pierre dating from about 650 and rebuilt in four phases until the 10th C. The last church was burnt down at the beginning of the 11th C., and it was resolved to erect a new one.
Today the Church of St Gertrude appears largely in the form in which it was conceived in the 11th C. The special nature of its architecture lies in the plan of two transepts and two choirs opposite one another.
