Geshur - International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
It may not have reached quite to the Jordan on the West; in which case the Geshurites literally dwelt "in the midst" of Israel (Joshua 13:13), since they were not expatriated by the half-tribe of Manasseh, and they retained their independence.
The only difficulty is that Geshur was an independent kingdom, and there is nothing to show how it was brought under the sway of the son of Saul.
In the catalogue of land still to be possessed in Joshua 13:2, the King James Version reads "Geshuri," the Revised Version (British and American) "the Geshurites," referring evidently to a district bordering on the Philistines.

The border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites and all Mt. Hermon were given to the half-tribe of Manasseh (Joshua 13:11).
It evidently lay between Geshur on the South and Hermon on the North, being probably bounded by Jordan on the West, although no certain indication of boundaries is now possible.
They would thus be hemmed in by Israel, which accounts for 'Geshur and Maacath dwell in the midst of Israel" (Joshua 13:13).It is possible that Abel-beth-maacah may have been a colony founded by men from Maacah.

Absalom (1) - International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
Absalom was born at Hebron (2 Samuel 3:3), and moved at an early age, with the transfer of the capital, to Jerusalem, where he spent most of his life.
To avoid punishment he now fled to the court of his maternal grandfather in Geshur, where he remained three years, or until David, his father, had relented and condoned the murderous act of his impetuous, plotting son.
How long a period elapsed between his return from Geshur and his open rebellion against his father David is a question which cannot be answered with any degree of certainty.

Geshur is notable in the Hebrew Bible for its visit by King David, and his subsequent marriage to Ma'achah, the daughter of the king of Geshur.
The past four seasons of excavations have focused heavily on the Iron Age City Gate complex (one of the biggest and best preserved in the region) and its link to a previously excavated palace.

Maacah was a high priestess of the Great Goddess in the kingdom of Geshur, and Tamar, who possesses prophetic powers, was to be her successor; now they find themselves among people who worship one God and forbid the rituals of their old faith.
Tamar continues to practice the rites demanded of her by the Goddess, whose loving and generous spirit is a far cry from the masculine and avenging God of Jerusalem.
The author presents a fictional autobiography of the king's stepdaughter, princess of Judah and Geshur and highpriestess of the goddess.

The three years he had spent at Geshur and his two years of isolation in Jerusalem had wrought no change in him: his heart was not humbled and his pride was not mortified.

David, who loved his children dearly, was very much grieved over this murder and also because he longed for Absalom, who was winsome and dashing, and reminded him in some ways of his own youth.

In the search for this biblical city, researchers have found that the site of Bethsaida, located approximately 2.5 Kilometers north of the present day coast of the sea of Galilee, has a much earlier history than is evidenced by New Testament accounts (Meyers, 1997).
History's first mention of Geshur is as a city-state, as it appears in the el-Amarna letters, an archive of cuneiform tablets found at Tell el-Amarna, Egypt.
The letters consist of diplomatic correspondence between two pharaohs, Akhenaten (also known as Amenophis IV, 1352-1338 B.C.E.) and his father Amenophis III (1390-1352 B.C.E.), and the rulers of small states in Palestine and elsewhere that were under Egyptian hegemony.
