Gesta Danorum ("Deeds of the Danes") is a work of Danish history, by 12th century author Saxo Grammaticus ("Saxo the Grammarian").
It is thought that Shakespeare never read Gesta Danorum, and instead had access to an auxiliary version of the tale describing the downfall of the Prince of Denmark, whose real name - Amleth - was used in anagram by Shakespeare for Hamlet.

We read in the preface of Gesta Danorum Saxo’s own words that hisfather and grandfather both served under King Valdemar I as warriorsand that he himself would like to serve King Valdemar II, though ina more spiritual way.
His elegant Latin and Roman knowledge, used in Gesta Danorum, makes it nearly certain that he was educated outside of Denmark, maybe in one of thebig church-schools in France.

The tale is similar to that of the death of Fjölnir son of Frey who accidently fell into a vat of mead and drowned while paying a friendly visit to Fridfódi the ruler of Zealand.
Saxo Grammaticus also relates (Gesta Danorum, Book 1) how King Hunding of Sweden believed a rumor that King Hadding of Denmark had died and held his obsequies with ceremony, including an enormous vat of ale.

Saxo Grammaticus, in Gesta Danorum, says that the Danish King Frode raised a huge united army from many conquered lands and defeated a king of the Huns.
As Western Europe was threatened by the Huns (A.D. 406~436 - their most famous king was called Attila) and the Roman Empire wasn't capable of holding its position on the British islands any more, the Angles were (according to The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle) asked to come and participate in the war against the Picts.

Moreover, both in Icelandic sources and in Gesta Danorum, king Sigurd Ring would become the ancestor of the houses of Ragnar Lodbrok and would thus be the semi-legendary ancestor of later Swedish and Danish royal houses, see the House of Munsö.
The Gesta Danorum then somewhat forcibly identifies Ericus disertus with Eirík, a legendary king of Sweden, a king who in the Ynglinga saga and elsewhere has an elder brother (rather than a father) named Alrek.

In that sense it is not much different from the first part of Sven Aggesøn's Brevis Historia Regum Dacie or Saxo's Gesta Danorum, tho much smaller and of much lesser quality.
The chronicle is believed to have been composed in the second half of the 12th century, experts mentions a date like 1170, and preceded the writing of the far more famous and prolix Gesta Danorum by Saxo, with which it shares many traditions not found in other sources.
The writer is unknown, however it is thought that he was a clerk tightly linked to the Church of Roskilde.

Since the Viking age, the Scandinavians have called it "the Eastern Lake" Austmarr, "Eastern Sea", appears in the Heimskringla, but Saxo Grammaticus recorded in Gesta Danorum an older name Gandvik, "-vik" being Old Norse for "bay", which implies that the Vikings correctly regarded it as an inlet of the sea.
Another form of the name, "Grandvik", attested in at least one English translation of Gesta Danorum, is likely to be a misspelling.
The source of all existing translations and new versions today can be found in Christiern Pedersen s Latin version Danorum Regum heroumque Historiae.
