Trigger Point Release & Esalen® Bodywork - Gestalt
Gestalt is the Zen branch of psychology, which allows clients to become centered in the present moment, freed of the shackles of the past and fears of the future.
She explains, "Not until I met Fritz Perls in 1965 did I learn that he had applied some concepts of gestalt psychology in formulating a practice of gestalt therapy in a way that paralleled my own applications of gestalt psychology theories in the kind of art experience work I was doing.
Gestalt is a specialization, in a category by itself, but most psychologists have studied gestalt methods and have integrated these into their practices.

Mary Henle: Gestalt Psychology and Gestalt Therapy
Gestalt psychologists, on the contrary, have the highest respect for disciplined thinking, one of whose finest achievements is science.
Gestalt psychology has formulated the hypothesis of psychophysical isomorphism, both as a position on the mind-body question and as a heuristic.
Thus, Gestalt psychologists have held that values are not arbitrarily attached to objects or actions, depending on subjective evaluation or on the individual's history of rewards and punishments.

 Ethical Considerations
The individual, however, in the Gestalt system is assumed to be responsible for increasing awareness of his value system and, based on his awareness and attention, his choices.
It is not that the Gestalt therapist preaches these principles to his clients in the sense of demanding acceptance, nor is it that he holds them as covert injunctions withheld by design.
In Gestalt therapy, as in Buber, this intellectual function is seen as an integral part of organismic functioning; however, when used exclusively or overemphasized, this function removes the individual from contact with more direct experience, aliveness.

 Contemporary Growth Therapies
Gestalt therapy is particularly useful in helping functional people enhance their awareness and deepen their relationships, and it can be integrated in a complementary way with other growth-oriented therapies, particularly TA and psychosynthesis.
The role of the gestalt therapist in the growth process is not that of "changer," teacher, or helper.
Gestalt therapy challenges the "aboutism" of endless intellectualizing (in theology and philosophy) concerning the "ultimate meaning of life" which so often becomes a substitute for the direct, enlivening experiencing of spiritual reality.

Gestalt therapy was developed nearly 50 years ago by a group of theorists based in New York: Fritz and Laura Perls, Paul Goodman, Paul Weisz, Elliot Shapiro and Isidor From.
Gestalt theory is a well-balanced theory in recognising both the advantages and the disadvantages, the neurotic and contactful uses of this.
In Gestalt therapy, which combines a paradoxical approach with a methodology which distinguishes direct and indirect suggestions and an emphasis on boundary conditions, the logic of the therapist's stance is very different.

 Tools and Techniques
PRAYER: Prayer, as a psychological tool, develops our consciousness and personality by a) changing consciousness or attitudes through self-surrender and b) giving as opposed to actually receiving something from a higher force.
In prayer, we ask to be better instruments of the Lord in serving others, in transforming our personality to a higher level of consciousness with such dominant qualities as love, joy, understanding, giving, forgiving, compassion, etc. Through repetition of prayer, these attributes or attitude changes actually manifest as we become humble, calmed, and centered.
We might look at prayers as invocations, bringing higher consciousness down into our present state of consciousness; whereas, meditation is a convocation, raising consciousness up to a higher level of consciousness.

Gestalt therapy can help you understand yourself in a fuller way.
Gestalt is recognized for it's focus on developing authentic relating in the present (I and Thou, Here and Now), respect for the individual details of each person's experience, and range of expressive techniques (including imagery & enactment).
Each person is viewed as a whole (Body/Mind/ Emotions), a unique individual in a particular life situation, someone who can only be fully understood in relation to their current situation as s/he experiences it.

 Grand Delusions - Chapter 12
Indeed, Fritz even wrote what he called the Gestalt Prayer, which he frequently used to begin his group therapy sessions: And by the way, after a patient finished with her time in the hot seat, he or she kissed Perls on the forehead; a mark of respect, it was believed.
As for Gestalt Therapy's techniques for resolving one's "unfinished business," they typically require "reenacting (either directly or in fantasy) the original situation and allowing the associated affect to be experienced and expressed." This usually involves hotseat work, with the patient acting out the topdogunderdog aspects of his or her personality.
Transpersonal Gestalt contends that Perls' cornerstone principle of the here-andnow is the link to such transpersonal concepts as the "flow of Tao" and the Jungian "collective unconscious." The shift away from the Perls legacy, however, can be found in new emphasis on the gentler side of life.

I believe, prayers help human mind to cope with difficulties, prayers build confidence say for a new risky adventure, taking an SAT test or a college final examination, gives comfort when faced with danger, illness, disappoitments and so on.
But a prayer that seeks the help from the "inner-self" instead of a supreme being looks a lot like those in the self-help books.
With regard to the 'prayer' I guess it's a question of to whom you are praying.

Gestalt! Vol.5; No.2 - A Discussion of Field Theory in Gestalt Therapy
Gestalt psychology tells us that subject and object are in a dialectical relationship, mutually effecting each other so that it is impossible to tell what is cause and what is effect.
However, in Gestalt therapy we present this as only a "working hypothesis." We ask the client if he/she can identify with that assessment, is there anything he/she is or can be aware of which resonates with this.
What makes such a process Gestalt, to me, is the concommitant need to examine the kind of limit (rigid, permeable, etc), including how it serves the system, and the immediate context in which the system functions.

Prayer and meditation can and should still be central components of our daily routines, but it's important to remember that our spiritual life is meant to be as continuous as our emotional or physical lives are.
In the phases when I feel most integrated and focussed, my favorite prayer is the one that I say on each breath when I inhale life and energy and joy and connection between the outer and inner worlds.
The oft-repeated Zen Buddhist Gestalt Prayer calls us to live with an attitude of "infinite gratitude for all that is past, infinite service to all that is present, and infinite responsibility for all that is future." The prayer continues with the oft-forgotten statement, "we focus now on the creation of all that is."

Behavior OnLine Forums - Depression Discussion
In writting an essay on what Gestalt has to offer in working with individuals with Depression I have quickly recognised that Gestalt therapy has many developed theories and principles that places this approach in very good stead for working with the key themes that are identified in the area of Depression.
I have in particular identified figure/ground formation becoming potentially fixed and the individual being unable to discriminate between a fantasised perception of self and phenomena in the present that differs from the fixed figure ie "I am hopeless at everthing".
These are not mechanical or strictly behavioral interventions when conducted within the perspective of Gestalt therapy's understanding of experiment, field, and especially of dialogue, when the supportive relationship between the therapist and client forms a ground.
