White Stripes: Get Behind Me Satan (2005): Reviews
Get Behind Me Satan is the first White Stripes album that sputters because it’s the first White Stripes album that tries to sell their image instead of their music.
Get Behind Me Satan lacks the confidently muscular (if sonically overreaching) ambition of Elephant, the raw, bruising intensity of White Blood Cells and the appealing hooks of De Stijl.
Get Behind Me Satan is surprising, all right, but not always in the right ways....

The White Stripes : Get Behind Me Satan (Japan Bonus Tracks) - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
According to Jack White, Get Behind Me Satan deals with "characters and the ideal of truth," but in truth, the album is just as much about what people expect from the White Stripes and what they themselves want to deliver.
As the opening track for Get Behind Me Satan, "Blue Orchid" is more than a little perverse, as though the White Stripes are giving their audience the required rock single before getting back to that little room, locking the door behind them, and doing whatever the hell they want.
As eclectic as Get Behind Me Satan is, it isn't perfect: the energy dips a little in the middle, and it's notable that "Instinct Blues," one of the more traditionally Stripes-sounding songs, is also one of the least engaging.

NME.COM - Reviews - The White Stripes : Get Behind Me Satan
The swiftness of 'Satan''s appearance has taken the music industry by surprise (lead single 'Blue Orchid' was officially released on iTunes a mere two weeks after it was finished), especially given that 2003's 'Elephant' album sat on the shelf for an entire year before its keeper, Jack White, saw fit to allow it out.
And while there are no synths, or seventy-piece orchestras, the arrangements of 'Get Behind Me Satan' are enough of a departure to contradict substantially what Jack White told NME last year.
Get Behind Me Satan is one of the best albums that The White Stripes have released which includes Elephant also.

The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan - Review - Uncut.co.uk
Get Behind Me Satan is certainly an odder record than the four White Stripes albums which preceded it.
Consequently, the most immediately lovable song on Get Behind Me Satan is “My Doorbell”, springy piano funk with a ‘30s novelty tune lodged in its DNA and White playing the vulnerable lover in a pinched falsetto reminiscent of Little Richard, albeit Little Richard thoroughly desexualised.
In this way, Get Behind Me Satan is the logical development of The White Stripes as a conceptual art project, a theatrical scam which brilliantly synthesises authenticity through the characters of two gauche Detroit siblings.

To me, that album is the type of music Sylvia Plath would have made if she hadn’t killed herself…and, well, lived and made music towards the end of the New Wave music era and into the House music of the early 1990’s.
I know this not because they notified me of the change either on their website or via signs at the stops that had updated stop times, but because I missed my bus twice this week, including this morning when I made a concerted effort to get to my stop early.
As Erika was the birthday girl, we made her get up and put a dollar in the dancer’s skirt, which of course she was mortified to do and was captured on film for all eternity.

BELIEVE THE HYPE? THE WHITE STRIPES' GET BEHIND ME SATAN.
Get Behind Me Satan shares Elephant's polish -- the band jumped to a mini-major after White Blood Cells -- but it feels less monochromatic.
Shifting stylistically as he never has before, White is still narrowly focused on the ins and outs of relationships, but he's added an impressive sonic heft that lends elegance and mystery to his heartsickness.
On Get Behind Me Satan, Jack and Meg are alone together again as they began, hanging out at his home studio in Detroit without any intrusions, thoughtful and communal and mending their hearts one track at a time.

Jack White is one of the most recognizable rock stars on the planet, but he’s still creepy-looking enough that if you passed him walking around your city late at night you’d likely be quick to cross the street.
From a purely musical standpoint, Get Behind Me Satan almost completely does away with the rudimentary guitar+drums formula that defined virtually all of their previous work and leaves in its place an uneasy stew of piano, marimba, banjo, and off-tempo multi-tracked vocals.
Whether or not we really get it, I think we should all just feel lucky to be along for the ride.

Someone (Satan?) has “took a white orchid, turned it blue.” To me, this bespeaks the ultimate reversal, juxtaposition, betrayal: the biblical fall from innocence—definitely a theme Jack White is interested in.

Their music is imbued with a primal vitality—a red guitar that howls with metallic blues, drums that thump and pound with the uneven thrust of creatures in heat.
When Jack lays down his cherry red plexiglass axe and sits behind the piano, he bangs out some of the album's best moments: take, for example, the safe bet for a second single, the sugar-sweet "My Doorbell," which marries the fizziest of pop melodies to a soulful '60s Motown shuffle.

When I apply it to my love life, it builds a carousel of beautiful young women, who, for one reason or another, don’t live up to the standards I have, and therefore, I am left watching them pass through the same circular cycle, over and over again.
It’s as if they were restoring a muscle car this whole time – borrowing tools, spending as little money as possible, putting in the blood, sweat, and tears, taking their time, refining piece by piece until, at last, they have one badass thing of beauty.
Now coming forth with their fifth album, Get Behind Me Satan, The White Stripes have finally reached a level that few have even approached.

Fortunately, Get Behind Me Satan settles down and stretches out in its second half, testing the amps on “Instinct Blues” before settling into a more crowd-pleasing bout of rock whomping (“Red Rain”) and genre explorations (the agreeably old-timey “As Ugly As I Seem”).
Get Behind Me Satan finds The White Stripes at an interesting career crossroads, as the desire to branch out in new directions meets the impulse to duplicate past successes and stay true to the roots of a decidedly roots-based sound.
In trying to do all of that at once—keeping things simple, yet altering the building blocks in subtle but profound ways—the band takes a sidestep that’s as easy to admire as it is hard to love.
