  GET OVER IT
The latest transformation from neglected classic to teenage tripe is Get Over It, a high-school take on Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." The thing that separates Get Over It from its ilk is the presence of the original work within the story, although in the somewhat unconventional form of a school musical.
Get Over It's protagonist is Berke Lawrence (Ben Foster, Liberty Heights), an integral part of his high school's basketball team along with best friends Felix (Colin Hanks, Roswell) and Dennis (Sisqó…seriously).
Get Over It was directed by Tommy O'Haver (Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss) — the man responsible for (unknowingly, I hope) unleashing the untalented force known as Sean Hayes on the world.

Desperate to get closer to his former love, Foster snags a role in the school play, but ends up falling for castmate Kirsten Dunst, the perky, songwriting sister of his best friend.
Get Over It boasts a terrific opening-credits sequence, in which the recently dumped Foster marches homeward followed by pop star Vitamin C (singing "Love Will Keep Us Together"), her band, a marching band, and a host of singing and dancing lovers who gleefully mock his pain.
Get Over It is probably the best movie that could have been made from Fleming's script, but everyone involved would have been better off had O'Haver simply thrown it out and started from scratch.

While this film does not do anything extraordinary for its genre, it has its moments, and Dunst and Foster are able to generate reasonable chemistry in their utterly predictable situation.
There are two aspects of this film which do make it notable: the liberal use of music (there is much incidental singing and a few full-fledged musical numbers) and the inclusion of Martin Short in a comic supporting role as the play's director.
As Berke is unable to "get over" the loss of Allison, he decides to try to get her back any way he can, including trying out for the school play in which she is cast as Hermia, the object of two men's affection.

 Get Over It Review
Get Over It Yet another movie that blends Shakespeare and high school for comic effect, the sum of Get Over It somehow equals more than its parts for a breezy, occasionally funny, often crude viewing experience.
Berke is crushed and can't quite, you guessed it, "get over it." To give you an idea of what kind of film this is, as Berke is leaving Allison's house with a box of stuff from their relationship, Vitamin C and her band follow behind him, singing and dancing.
Adding to the silliness and sight gags throughout the film, all the sets are decorated with a strong 70s look, even though the movie is set in present day.

The average high school guy is crazy about the coolest, most beautiful girl in school, but she dumps him and starts dating a really hot exchange student who seems to be great at everything.
About half of the film's running time is occupied by rehearsals for and the performance of a soft-rock version of Midsummer Night's Dream, and it taps into the usual teen movie clichés.
Films under five are generally awful even if you like that kind of film, equivalent to about one and a half stars from the critics or less, depending on just how far below five the rating is.

GET OVER IT - DVD   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Get Over It stars newcomer Ben Foster, an actor with an original, vulnerable face but a surprisingly opaque humanity; I didn't find him endearing for a second.
The trouble is, when you get right down to it, this is just an opening credits sequence--it doesn't do anything except happen, and it ends as hoarily as it possibly can, with Berke screaming at the camera in nightmare apoplexy.
Yet for most of its 86 minutes, the first and final five of which are glorified MTV videos, Get Over It is a snooze, and all of the attempts at formula subversion (faeries and an unhinged Martin Short also contribute) amount to crap on top of crap.

The films without that may be OK for the girls, but the boys don't like to go to chick flicks on a date.
There are some good PG-13 films out there like Save the Last Dance, Remember the Titans and Bring it On (Kirsten Dunst); but most seem to be missing the mark, even with the intended audience.
Get Over It never gets off the ground and in spite of Kirsten Dunst doing her usual fine job, with the help of Ben Foster, the story was of little interest to me. Crude humor mixed with an updated version of a serious school play, and blossoming teenage love, separated faster than oil and water.

Berke spends the rest of the film trying to win her back, which will take a small miracle since Allison has fallen for a former boy-band member with a sexy British accent.

 Film Blather: Get Over It
The film's ingenious first sequence, which plays over the opening credit, is an uninterrupted shot of Berke walking sullenly home while singer Vitamin C, random neighbors, and finally a whole brass band follow behind him singing an ironically peppy pop song.
The central romance, then, between Berke and Kelly, is diluted by the film's desperation; it tries for naturalism with their relationship, but completely abandons it when just about anything else is concerned.
Get Over It should have stayed in the spirit of its first scene.

The surest proof that the movie is dead in the water, even by its genre's undemanding standards, can be found in the way Kirsten Dunst, by far the movie's most proven and reliable young talent, keeps dodging out of her scenes—not acting badly, really, just trying to cover up that she's acting at all.
It's further proof, as if any were needed, of Get Over It's astonishing thinness that the big name this time around is Colin Hanks, who prays for stray reflections of daddy Tom's winsome charm as he mugs through a stupid role as Dunst's jealous older brother.
Get Over It extends the promise of perking up every now and then when Martin Short's old-school gay stereotype of a drama teacher pops on screen, but even his dependably goofy grins and dry punchlines can't breathe life into the lame duck O'Haver and Fleming hath wrought.

TheMovieBoy Review: Get Over It (2001)
"Get Over It," the new teen film surprisingly directed by Tommy O'Haver (1998's "Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss"), has enough offbeat elements to distinguish it from the pack of cliched movies of its ilk that have been released in recent years.
While "Get Over It" is threatened into become a tiresome retread of 1999's "10 Things I Hate About You" and 2000's "Whatever It Takes," the bright performances and mostly non-stereotypical teenaged characters save the day.
"Get Over It" isn't great, and it isn't deep, but it doesn't aspire to be.

Why he is myopic with Kelly appears difficult to understand because she easily competes with Allison in attractiveness; the other problem is that she is the little sister of his best friend Felix (Colin Hans).

RTE.ie Entertainment - Get Over It
Having received rave reviews for her performance as troubled schoolgirl Lux Lisbon in 'The Virgin Suicides', 'Get Over It' finds Kirsten Dunst exploring the happier side of teen traumas and first love.
But when Kelly suggests that he should audition with her for the school's production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', in a bid to win leading lady Allison back, little does Berke realise that the drama onstage will have nothing on his personal life.
O'Haver's film carries a PG15 certificate which is a shame because its sickly sweet but undeniably warm look at romance on the rebound merits an audience below that age.

Tommy O'Haver, the director of Get Over It, knows next to nothing about how to stage a conventional dramatic scene, but he does have one gift: He should immediately go out and make a lip synched pop musical.

In the Road Warrior and Lethal Weapon films, as well as such one-shots as Conspiracy Theory (1997) and The Patriot (2000), Gibson courted martyrdom, and he achieved it.
Bad reviews won't matter, either, since Gibson has called his critics "the forces of Satan" or, more charitably, the "dupes of Satan." After Gibson's pre-emptive blasts, an attack on his Passion will be interpreted by some as an attack on their religious beliefs instead of on filmmaking that is theologically, morally, and—by the way—artistically suspect.
