Vargas was a wealthy pro-industrial nationalist and anti-communist who favored capitalist development and liberal reforms, but actually posed little serious threat to the elite paulista gentry.
Vargas, in effect, sought to forge a corporatist, centralized state along Fascist lines to mitigate these disparate class interests and to quell disorder during a chaotic interwar era.
Vargas also quelled a paulista female worker's strike by co-opting much of their platform and requiring their "factory commissions" to use government mediation in the future.

Overall, as you might expect from a school with such a quantitative orientation, GMAT scores get considerable weight in consideration of applicants.
In recent years, though, the school has begun to interview nearly all its applicants to assess their interpersonal abilities (some 90 percent of those admitted in 1998 were interviewed either on campus or by an alum).
Chicago has also begun putting a lot of effort into getting its name before the public, so it wouldn't be surprising to find the school becoming significantly more selective in coming years (in 1998, Chicago admitted about 23 percent of those who applied).

Although denounced by some as an unprincipled dictator, Vargas was revered by his followers as the “Father of the Poor,” for his battle against big business and large landowners.

Levine's presentation of Vargas and Brazil within the context of global events is a refreshing and sophisticated approach, and, by providing this wider context to Brazilian history, the author ensures that this book will appeal to a diverse audience.
Levine, of course, does not uncritically accept this prosaic picture of Vargas, and in the final two chapters of the book, he addresses the legacy of Vargas, arguing that "striking parallels" existed between the political repression of the 1930s and 1940s and the repression of the military dictatorship that lasted from 1964-1985.
