John O'Sullivan on Immigration & Borders on National Review Online
It would be much more consistent with the bill's intention to compel them to apply from abroad — where they would have to undergo a serious examination of their claims at a U.S. consulate.
And to allow such illegal immigrants to stay in the U.S., effectively jumping ahead of law-abiding would-be immigrants in the entry line, because they have acquired an employer or a spouse during their sojourn, is a form of amnesty.
But these doubts are surely reasons for cautious checking of potential fellow citizens and next-door neighbors rather than for welcoming them with open arms and porous borders, and then learning late in the day that they are not what they said on their application forms.

News in Science - Gamers get serious, face reality - 01/11/2006
"Serious games are games used for some other serious pursuit than entertainment," says Ben Sawyer, co-director of the Serious Games Initiative, which held its first summit two years ago.
In one episode, for example, two soldiers seeking information from local Iraqis sitting in a cafe are shown how to introduce themselves to make clear they are not a threat and are told to take off their sunglasses as eye contact is important in Iraqi culture.
Sawyer says he expects the next big success story to be a serious game being developed to enable students to design their own game on a certain topic.

 Australian Flexible Learning Framework -
'Serious games' were discussed at the Tokyo Game Show Forum in September and the concept was introduced with a great deal of industry support and enthusiasm to the world stage at the October 'Serious Games Summit' in Washington.
"Serious games have the same ability as any normal computer game to emotionally immerse people in game play using adventure or strategy, but the difference is the subtly disguised intention that players will learn as they play, with progress checkpoints acting as a platform for knowledge and content assessment," Mr Denyer said.
Serious games should not be confused with other interactive educational e-learning tools, says Adrian Denyer, 2004 Flexible Learning Leader.

Some "play" can be taken much too seriously as when overzealous parents scream at their children as they begin to compete in organized sports; other "play" is not treated seriously enough as when a corporation discourages (perhaps even punishes) innovative thinking unless it has an immediate and favorable impact on the bottom line.
