GetWiki - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
GetWiki is an interactive PHP/MySQL application for wikis, most notably Wikinfo.
The intention of GetWiki's author, M.R.M. Parrott, was to add some new features to MediaWiki, but it was decided to fork the codebase from the MediaWiki project in January 2004.
Much of the new GetWiki code was released under a non-commercial-use-only version of the Creative Commons license instead of the GNU General Public License (GPL).

 Wikinfo | GetWiki:1.0
GetWiki uses a "split" license, where part of the code and the images are not released under the GPL, but under the CCL.
The case with GetWiki is not different in principle, but due to its lack of centrality or influence, a dual license would not prevent commercial usurpation, and the GPL used alone would encourage it.
Therefore, the split licensing of GetWiki may break spirit with the GPL, but it is not meant to prevent otherwise open source applications or derivative works - it is not a patent.

 Wikinfo | GetWiki
GetWiki introduces XML import of individual articles from any other Wiki-site offering XML export.
GetWiki also uses XHTML and CSS document and accessibility standards and high content security features.
GetWiki was first released on Wikinfo in January, 2004 by M.R.M. Parrott, developer of SOHOdb, partially under a Creative Commons license for the images and some of the code.

GetWiki - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Much of the new GetWiki code was released under a version of the Creative Commons license instead of the GNU General Public License (GPL).
This meant that the authors of MediaWiki were unable to use the code in their project (which continues to be completely licensed under the GNU GPL), thus slowing the adaptation of this feature.
Unlike current versions of MediaWiki, GetWiki outputs valid XHTML, instead of HTML.

The task was to fix a few small snags in the software, which naturally grew into finding more snags, nitpicks and then an all out redesign of the browser ouput and styles.
Further, there were at least 4 different standards of comments, tabbing, and other conventions, meaning the code had to be decoded in order to be fixed or tweaked.
Getwiki is a major plus to GetWiki 1.0.

GetWiki: critical point of view is that the software is new, has some bugs, notably in making an interwiki link standard difficult to express (which MediaWiki does not) which may be deliberate sabotage for commercial purposes.
Anyone who thinks discussion of an interwiki link standard is only relevant to GetWiki must think there is nothing else managing the GFDL text corpus, like e.g.
Most likely it is his own spamlike assertions that GetWiki will eventually solve the problem that motivates him to make it hard to find or compare any equivalent proposals on other large public wikis.

NewsForge | The open source wiki behind Wikipedia
GetWiki was forked from MediaWiki in January, 2004 by M.R.M. Parrott, partially under a Creative Commons license for the images and some of the code.
GetWiki lets anyone be an interactive GFDL corpus access provider, specializing only those pages in the GFDL corpus they have a need to.
GetWiki is licensed under CC-by-nc-sa and so is Share Alike and Open Content but not Free Software nor Open Source.

GetWiki is the improved software that is a fork of MediaWiki, in use at Wikinfo.
Anyone considering using GetWiki should review the critical point of view of it taken at Recyclopedia.
It would appear that the primary developer, M.R.M._Parrott, is a simple control freak with no capacity whatsoever to engage in a standards process or work within a deliberative democracy.

 GetMeta | GetWiki:Custom Formulas
GetWiki allows TeX markup for mathematics and logic formulas.
In the future, as browsers become even more XML capable, GetWiki could easily generate MathML instead, which is also a subset of XML.
Very complex formulas and matrices might very well fail to render correctly under this approach, so proofreading is necessary, and perhaps, further translation by the author(s) from TeX to plain text.

From the outside looking in, there seems to be alot of holy-war type action between these two camps as well as some of the sites that are built with these wikis.
What I do care about is that I couldn't get GetWiki installed and running properly in short order.
My plan was to use my instance of GetWiki as a peg board for the various bits of Social Software that I was going to be evaluating.

GetWiki coders are not responsive in general, and the Greens would be best advised to simply exploit the CC-nc-sa license to take over the project as a whole, rather than invest in any extensions of mediawiki or tikiwiki tools.

you may also want to look at GetWiki (a fork of mediaWiki), the feature I found most interesting is it's XML page export feature.
However, I was not able to find any detailed manual nor much information about how GetWiki works -- except for the brief descriptions in http://www.getwiki.net/getcrackin.htm and also on GetMeta, http://www.getwiki.net/wiki.php?title=GetWiki:1.0.

Interwiki link standard - Wikibooks, collection of open-content textbooks
Protocol and editing functions are assumed to be similar, so the interwiki link standard is a bit simpler than the standard wiki URI for linking into a wiki from non-wiki space.
This contrasts with the current GetWiki and MediaWiki usage:
A single standard for at least the GFDL text corpus is highly desirable, and hopefully will be supported in GetWiki_2.0, which will then hopefully displace MediaWiki entirely.

Interwiki identity standard - Wikibooks, collection of open-content textbooks
See en:Wikinfo:interwiki identity standard for a proposal for GetWiki recognition of one ID, preferably jabber.org ID, for all of GetWiki space.
If GetWiki also monitors the whole GFDL text corpus at the standard wiki URIs, and the wikitext standard supports the RecentChanges and DeletedPages log's conventions, it would be easy to have some common address other than simple IP numbers across many large public wikis.
This would simplify identity disputes for those who used such a voluntary common ID. For clashing allegations of identity, only a faction system can possibly work.
