Gethen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gethen is the fictional planet where the action develops in the science fiction novel "The Left Hand of Darkness", by Ursula K. Le Guin.
Gethen's axis is not tilted (as is the case with Earth), but a relatively high orbital eccentricity produces global seasons.
The inhabitants of Gethen are androgynes, biologically hermaphroditic humans; for approximately three weeks of each month they are biologically neuter, and for the remaining week are male or female, as determined by pheromonal negotiation with an interested sex partner.

The Left Hand of Darkness - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One of the first major works of "feminist science fiction" (although Le Guin dislikes such labels), it is the account of the efforts of a man named Genly Ai, a representative from a galactic federation of worlds (the Ekumen), who seeks to bring the world of Gethen into that society.
The inhabitants of Gethen are androgynes, biologically hermaphroditic humans; for twenty four days of each twenty six day Kemmer cycle they are biologically neuter, and for the remaining two days are male or female, as determined by pheromonal negotiation with an interested sex partner.
The Gethenians were genetically engineered for this characteristic long ago, possibly to maximize reproductive success on the harsh glaciated world of Gethen, or because the ancient biological engineers were curious about what such people would be like.

Fredric Jameson- World Reduction in Le Guin: The Emergence of Utopian Narrative
The "official" message of the book, however, would seem to be rather different than this, involving a social and historical meditation on the institutions of Karhide and the capacity of that or any other society to mount full-scale organized warfare.
Gethen thus stands as an attempt to imagine an experimental landscape in which our being-in-the-world is simplified to the extreme, and in which our sensory links with the multiple and shifting perceptual fields around us are abstracted so radically as to vouchsafe, perhaps, some new glimpse as to the ultimate nature of human reality.
The reading we have proposed of Le Guin's experimental ecology suggests, however, the existence of yet a third and quite distinct technique of variation which it will be the task of the remainder of this analysis to describe.

Maybe Le Guin is trying to open the eyes of men by creating a culture that follows these physical rules or, perhaps, she is just creating her ideal world, one were everyone understands the feelings and processes of reproduction from both the male and the female perspectives.
For example, Genly learns from the Gethens that things are not always what they seem, that grass is not always greener on the other side, and that the sex of a person does not determine their ability to be a loyal friend and a source of knowledge.
While I think it was important to mention that Gethen had two different religions, I do not understand why it was necessary to provide a story on the one religion that did not seem to play any role in Genly’s quest.

For Gethen is inhabited by a society with a rich, ancient culture full of strange beauty and deadly intrigue—a society of people who are both male and female in one, and neither.

LeGuin, always one to be on the leading edge of philosophical and speculative thought, presented a very different (deviant???) view of gender and gender relations...not to mention relations between different "cultures." Although portraying the beings on Gethen as human, she did so with a huge difference from our own "polarity" of males and females.

The book deals with the world of Gethen where the people are either male, female or kind of neuter (not quite hermaphrodites, they don't have both organs working at once.) For about 7 days a month the Gethenians become sexually active and find a partner.
Hormonal changes happen and the Gethenian become either male or female for the temporary mating period, and their partner becomes the opposite sex (unless they become a woman and are pregnant.

One can move about in a society as a curiosity and, hopefully, bring the Ekumen's message of interplanatial peace and co-operation to a new world.
Genly Ai soon realizes that the Ekumen, in all of its wisdom, never considered a world so far away from all other inhabitable worlds that the thought of beings living off of its own planet -- out in the "Void" as they name space -- is ludicrous.
The story is told alternately by Genly Ai and his guide on Gethen, Therem Harth, and, interspersed between the chapters of their accounts of their adventures, are parables from the Gethenian mythos.
