Getting Things Done is the title of a book by David Allen.
This stage involves writing down whatever things one can think of that needs doing (possibly using trigger lists), and all places where relevant information might accumulate, such as in folders and drawers, are emptied into one place.
Things that need action that we need to keep in our mind Allen calls open loops, which perpetually soak up our attention.

There were a few things that didn’t work out the way I planned and other things I didn’t get done because they depended on someone else.
I am starting to think the more things you have on your to do list, the more you begin to actually accomplish and the list of things you want/need to do will actually grow.
Can’t really save that I have gotten “better” at getting things done – but I am mostly getting things done, and I guess that is what counts G Have at least one goal per day – and most days I actually reach my goal.

Yes, Getting Things Done offers a complete system for downloading all those free-floating gotta-dos clogging your brain into a sophisticated framework of files and action lists--all purportedly to free your mind to focus on whatever you're working on.
However, after reading David Allen's `Getting Things Done' I realised that there were areas of my personal time management that could benefit from applying the GTD system.
Unfortunately life is not like this and things that may not be a priority to you still need to be sorted out as efficiently as possible.

I've talked about my personal system of organization before and my use of Getting Things Done.
Outlook doesn't support "tagging" of Email messages (categories are a possibility, but they aren't very easy to set or search) so we have this big hierarchy of folders that typically run around in and drag-and-drop messages.
In the "pure" GTD world those are supposed to be "context" that I work in, like @home and @office, so I'm breaking the rules a bit.

I needed the Archive rule to get things out of the Action Required or Waiting Smart Mailboxes when they were dealt with.
I can’t say I really know much about GTD other than what I’ve read over at 43Folders, but what I’ve learned has been very helpful in helping me be more productive and get a better handle on all the stuff I’m juggling.

His problem with daily to-do lists is exactly the problem that I had with them (everything doesn't get done, and the motion of things to the next day is discouraging), and I still think they're useful in conjunction with a larger task management system as a way of planning each day.
