The Battle of Gettysburg Pennsylvania began on July 1 with Confederate troops attacking that Union cavalry division on McPherson Ridge, west of town.
Gettysburg park licensed guides say that this is the one book they consider the foundation of their knowledge and essential to passing their licensing exam.
The author skillfully overlays the campaign against the political backdrop of the period, and seems to relate many of the command decisions to Presidental authority.

While the campaign should be capable of nearly infinite replay without playing the same set of scenarios twice, the designer has always enjoyed playing hypothetical scenarios in which both sides are blind.
Campaign Gettysburg allows you to not only play all of the individual scenarios mentioned above, but allows you to play the game as a campaign which pulls from 1596 differnt scenarios to recreate the resulting situations.
The campaign kicks off on June 1st and can be played all the way through July 14th, depending on the results of the various battles that take place.

 The Gettysburg Campaign Description
By June 30, both armies were converging upon Gettysburg and the battle, which would be the turning point of the war, was set to commence.
After the discovery on June 30 that Gettysburg was occupied by Brigadier General John Buford's division of Federal cavalry, the Confederates on July 1 sent the divisions of Major General Henry Heth and Major General William Pender of Hill's Corps, down the Chambersburg Road to drive Buford away and occupy Gettysburg.
He had initially hoped to avoid a general engagement since the strength of the enemy was unknown, and the terrain in the Gettysburg area unfamiliar.

This is only the tip of the iceberg of Gettysburg books, and it serves as an excellent intro to the rest of the material.

During the planning for the Gettysburg campaign Longstreet thought that he had elicited from Lee an agreement that the Confederate forces would act strategically on the offensive, but would adopt a defensive posture on future battlefields.
