But two years later, Gilberto made a triumphant return to Carnegie for a concert with saxophonist Stan Getz and his former wife, singer Astrud Gilberto, that resulted in the live recording "Getz/Gilberto #2," the sequel to their studio album that remains one of the best-selling jazz albums ever.
Gilberto made his debut at what is now the JVC Jazz Festival in 1978 at a memorable Carnegie concert with Getz and guitarist Charlie Byrd, the first jazz musician to discover the bossa nova sound.
Gilberto is the antidote in an age when too many singers rely on belting out the lyrics, backup singers and dancers, special effects and even wardrobe malfunctions to stand out.

Getz/Gilberto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It brought together saxophonist Stan Getz, who had already performed the genre on his LP [[Jazz Samba]], Joao Gilberto (one of the creators of the style), and Jobim, a celebrated Brazilian songwriter, who wrote most of the songs in the album.
It became one of the best-selling jazz albums of all times, and turned singer Astrud Gilberto, who sang on the track of "The Girl from Ipanema" and "Corcovado", into an international sensation.
An interesting tidbit about this recording is that producer Creed Taylor kept the recording in a drawer for a year before releasing it, for reasons known only to him.

Getz/Gilberto - SACD Stereo CD review on AudioRevolution.com
As legend tells it, Jobim and Gilberto didn’t want her to perform on the record because she was not a “professional” singer and they felt that she sang flat.
Getz insisted on including her and the track is now a classic.
If Astrud Gilberto is not the greatest singer in musical history, it doesn’t matter much, because her sex appeal and slightly raspy vocal tone make up for it.

 Stan Getz - Verve Records
Stan Getz was a tenor saxophonist of the first rank who, while exploring and pursuing a purity of musical expression, maintained a large following.
He attracted it early in his career with his recording of "Early Autumn" with the Woody Herman band in 1948, more or less sustained it during the Fifties (which were not always tranquil times for him), and then, in the early Sixties, expanded it as he helped introduce Brazilian bossa nova rhythms to jazz.
Getz recorded his most sublime creations during his long affiliation with first the Clef and Norgran labels and then Verve Records, from 1952 to 1971.

João Gilberto   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The Gilberto name is utterly synonymous with bossa nova: the light, melodic, samba-based musical hybrid that swept America and the rest of the world in the mid-60s.
Guitarist/vocalist/composer Joao Gilberto grew up interested in Brazilian samba, absorbing the traditional rhythms and melodies, but became seduced by jazz - the other ingredient in the bossa recipe - listening to radio stations playing American music.
Getz and Byrd's Jazz Samba, recorded in 1962, featured compositions by both Jobim and Gilberto, and put bossa nova squarely on the map; but it was the 1963 classic, Getz/Gilberto, that made the Gilberto name.
