Gewandhausorchester Leipzig (Orchestra) - Short History
The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra (= GOL), founded in 1781, is a German orchestra with one of the most impressive traditions.
In addition to the Symphony concerts and the orchestra’s activities with the Leipzig Opera, the ensemble is also responsible for performing church music at St Tomas’s.
Together with the Choir of St Thomas Church, the Gewandhaus Orchestra is one of the cornerstones of the Bach tradition still upheld today in Leipzig.

Full size orchestras may sometimes be called "symphony orchestras" or "philharmonic orchestras"; these prefixes do not indicate any difference either to the instrumental content or role of the orchestra, but can be useful to distinguish different orchestras based in the same city (for instance, the London Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra).
At first the orchestra was an aristocratic luxury, performing privately at the courts of the princes and nobles of Italy; but in the 17th century performances were given in theatres, and Germany eagerly followed.
In ancient Greece the orchestra was the space between the auditorium and the proscenium (or stage), in which were stationed the chorus and the instrumentalistss.

Special sound dressed in proud history - smh.com.au
The Gewandhaus players, based in a city that has a long history as a powerhouse of musical, literary and dramatic activity, are proud of being one of the few surviving representatives of an older type of continental European orchestral sound and are determined to preserve it.
On the concert platform, as he conducts his orchestra in Leipzig's Gewandhaus concert hall, Blomstedt is a spare, quietly commanding figure, marking the beat with his baton in large units of time wherever possible and using his left hand precisely for detailed cueing.
The Gewandhaus Orchestra's touring contingent of 124 instrumentalists is two-thirds of its total strength of 185.

Kurt Masur - Reviews   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
Mendelssohn was the orchestra's conductor from 1835 to 1847, and like most Gewandhaus Kapellmeisters, he took an active role in all aspects of the city's cultural life.
Gewandhaus Kapellmeister since 1970, he rules his orchestra and the city's music and, indeed, his region's inner self-esteem in grandly sovereign fashion, for all his truly sincere espousal of democracy both within the Gewandhaus and in the country at large.
The Gewandhaus Orchestra's special character, with its dark string tone, plangent winds and old-fashioned instrument design (rotary trumpets, for instance), was reinforced by the inability of Gewandhaus players to gravitate freely to other orchestras and the unwillingness of most Westerners to play in Leipzig.

 Athens News
THE CONCERT given by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra on August 23 at the Herod Atticus theatre was an occasion that will linger in the minds of those present.
He was well supported by the orchestra who gave a careful reading distinguished by a certain restraint of emotion, subtle phrasing - the oboe melody in the second movement was rendered with a naturalness that belied the artistry required from the player - and a concern for the formal aspects of the work.
That the orchestra was also placed on a higher-levelled stage than is normally reserved for concerts in this theatre, and closer to the back of it (with the episcenium thus operating like a better sounding board than on previous occasions), gives the measure of the meticulousness of their preparation for the concert.

 Gewandhaus zu Leipzig - History
For over 200 years, it has also served as the regular orchestra for the Leipzig Opera, in addition to its weekly performances of the cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach at St. Thomas’s Church, as well as further 35 guest appearances a season throughout the world and numerous other recordings.
Leipzig’s reputation as a city & music is largely attributable to the varied activities of the Gewandhaus Orchestra and in particular the orchestra’s standing as the oldest concert orchestra to have been founded by the merchant classes.
Thanks to the untiring efforts of the Gewandhauskapellmeister at the time, Kurt Masur, the orchestra was finally able to move into a modern performance venue, ideally suited to all its musical, acoustical and technical requirements: the third Gewandhaus on the Augustusplatz.

The Edinburgh festival 2004 -- EIF Review
The Leipzig Gewandhaus orchestra took the Usher Hall audience on a mini-tour of Germany's musical heritage in its final Festival concert.
It was a slimmed down Gewandhaus string section - with harpsichord -- that performed Bach's second orchestral suite, taking the mind back to the early days when the infant orchestra regularly accompanied Bach cantatas in Thomaskirche.
The piece played was more of a flute concerto than an orchestral suite and Katalin Kramarics, the orchestra's principal flautist, was unflagging in a demanding display during which she scarcely had pause to draw breath.

The enthusiastic ovation clearly delighted Chailly, and he and the orchestra rewarded the audience with a slinky and sensual reading of the "Dance of the Seven Veils" from Strauss's "Salome." This is an inspired partnership; do not miss them when they return.

The orchestra's versatility is impressive: in addition to an annual season of around 70 concerts, it is the regular pit band in Leipzig's opera house, and members of the Gewandhaus perform Bach cantatas every week at St. Thomas Church (where Bach himself was music director during the orchestra's infancy).
The Leipzig Gewandhaus made an impressive adjustment to Classical style: two-thirds of the symphonic orchestra had left the stage; its normal quota of 8 double bass players was reduced to 1; textures were light and transparent.

Mehta said that in Masur's 11-year tenure as principal conductor and music director, he had contributed immeasurably to the development of the orchestra and was "one of the outstanding leaders" in its history.
After a decade of work with both orchestras, Masur was named Kappellmeister of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, a 250-year-old institution conducted in the past by maestros from Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy to Wilhelm Furtwängler.
Masur went on to lead and shape the orchestra for 26 years and the "Gewandhaus sound" he created became known to and imitated by musicians and orchestras around the world.

 Kurt Masur - Reviews
The tradition of the Gewandhaus encompasses the authority of long experience and continuity but also a wholeheartedly progressive spirit that marked the institution in its proudest years, under such starry music directors as Felix Mendelssohn (Gewandhauskapellmeister from 1835 to 1847), Arthur Nikisch (1895-1922), and Wilhelm Furtwängler (1922-28).
Any orchestra so charged with that time's living presence is bound to have a cherished place in one's affections, especially since the number of such orchestras is dwindling fast.
It perpetuates the name of the orchestra's first permanent home, in use from 1781 to 1884, upstairs at a true Gewandhaus (house of cloth), the place where eighteenth-century merchants gathered for the Leipzig fair would display their wares.

 Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra - smh.com.au
It is easy to imagine that the recording age has reduced regional differences in orchestral playing to produce an international style where one ensemble sounds pretty much like another.
Their approach aims to eliminate any hint of unnatural accent, allowing the shape of each phrase and its tonal colourings to grow naturally from its inner tensions and purpose.
If until then the orchestra had presented itself as a master of classical phrasing, Strauss's Ein Heldenleben, Opus 40 demonstrated that this clear balance and smooth sense of line serve just as well for large romantic blockbusters.

This famous Leipzig orchestra, under director Herbert Blomstedt, began its four-performance Australian tour on Wednesday night playing to its strengths - music by two of the most illustrious musicians associated both with the city of Leipzig and this ensemble.
What made the Gewandhaus interpretation enlightening was the lightness of touch from the strings and the unexpected details that emerged as the well-loved pages flowed past.
Not that the group is flawless; the horns had a bad night in the symphony, fluffing a very exposed passage; the first violins are clearly used to setting the style and their tendency is to drown out the woodwind, who play more self-effacingly than seems necessary.
