Topic: Geyserite

  The UnMuseum - Geysers
Though the water is hot and under pressure it would never be ejected from geysers with such tremendous force if it were not for the special quality of the rocks in the geyser fields.
Geyserite, which is the third necessary condition, is mostly silicon dioxide, is dissolved from the rocks and deposited on the walls of the geyser's plumbing system and on the surface around the geyser.
By measuring geyserite deposits on the cone and carbon-dating pieces of wood caught in the geyserite, scientists have estimated that Old Faithful is roughly 300 years old.

IngentaConnect Petrography and genesis of spicular and columnar geyserite from t...
Domal masses of geyserite, which surround many geyser vents in the Whakarewarewa geothermal area, are formed largely of spicules, spicule columns, and shrub columns.
In the geyserite mounds at Whakarewarewa, spicules and spicule columns are common, whereas shrub columns are rare.
Interbedding and intercalation of spicular geyserite with shrub columnar geyserite indicate, however, that these different morphologic entities probably formed under similar environmental conditions on the mounds around the geyser vents.

BIOGEOCHEMISTRY OF ANTIMONY AND ARSENIC IN HYDROTHERMAL FLUIDS AND OPALINE DEPOSITS FROM EL TATIO GEYSER FIELD, CHILE
Geochemical analyses of opaline deposits (geyserite) and sediment samples consisted of HF dissolution for bulk trace metal analysis, sequential extraction to determine the availability and bonding character of metals, microprobe analysis, and laser ablation-ICP-MS.
Geochemical evolution of the water and geyserite precipitation was modeled using Geochemist's Workbench.
Sb oxidation-rate analyses were inconclusive; however, the partitioning of Sb into geyserite and the periodicity of the laminations indicate there are changes in the controls of Sb biogeochemistry.

A small tree limb coated with geyserite is in the case with the spectacular cone shown below.
In 1881, when this geyserite cone was collected, steam and hot water erupted from its 17 vents to a height of 9 m (30 ft).
As the water cooled and evaporated, it deposited geyserite silica, a variety of opal.

Early workers characterized high-temperature (>73°C) siliceous sinter, or geyserite, as "abiogenic" in origin, despite the fact that many varieties of high-temperature sinter show internal structures that are very much like those of biogenic stromatolites.
Instead, thermophilic bacteria may play a major role in geyserite structuring and deposition at submicroscopic levels, including locally enhancing silica precipitation rates where growth rates are highest.
However, in the high-temperature (>73°C) areas of hot springs, the growth and macrostructure of siliceous sinter (geyserite) appear to be less dependent on temperature than on local hydrodynamic conditions, which are dependent on the eruptive characteristics of individual hot springs.

I could be wrong as it is hard to see exactly where the various springs of the Pink Cone Group are if they are not erupting (all except one are geysers), and compare their locations to the map in my geyser book.
It is illegal and very dangerous (read Death in Yellowstone), and very damaging to the mineral formations (geyserite is crushed to powder by hiking boots) to wander off the trails in the thermal areas in Yellowstone.

One sinter consists of botryoidal heads of vitreous, opaline silica or "geyserite" that likely formed from actively spouting eruptions of boiling fluids along the fault zone.
The sinter deposits range in age from 3438 +/-82 years (for opal-cemented shallow lacustrine or apron terrace pond deposits), and 2178 +/-57 years (on a small laminated sinter), to modern (for the large deposit of opaline geyserite).
Paleoseismic studies identify three historic fault episodes in the central Dixie Valley area that may be related to the spring activity; the 1954 Dixie Valley rupture, a penultimate event (The Gap Event) bracketed between 3.7 and 2.2 ka, and an older event between 12 ka and 35.4ka (see Caskey, Bell, Slemmons, and Ramelli, 2000).

Hot Springs - Yellowstone National Park   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
As the hot water travels through this "natural plumbing system," the high temperatures dissolve some of the silica in the rhyolite, yielding a solution of silica within the water.
At the surface, these silica-laden waters form a rock called geyserite, or sinter, creating the massive geyser cones; the scalloped edges of hot springs; and the expansive, light- colored, barren landscape characteristic of geyser basins.
While in solution underground, some of this silica deposits as geyserite on the walls of the plumbing system forming a pressure-tight seal, locking in the hot water and creating a system that can withstand the great pressure needed to produce a geyser.

The Company's environmental consultants, the BC Department of Mines and Electra Gold officials developed a strategy to study the effects of the proposed operation at the Apple Bay industrial mineral property in the context of producing chalky geyserite and geyserite as cement feed stock.
Keystone and Electra Gold's other environmental consultants are confident that the test results will exceed acceptable guidelines for protection of the environment.

Siliceous sinter (geyserite; fiorite) is a deposit of opaline or amorphous silica that occurs as an incrustation around hot springs and geysers and sometimes forms conical mounds (geyser cones) or terraces.
Iron ore sintering consists of heating a layer of fines until partial melting occurs and individual ore particles fuse together.
Siliceous sinter, or geyserite, is an impure quartz deposited by hot springs and is a form of opal.

Near the Black Sand Geyser is a deep pit in the geyserite, which has been washed out, leaving a crust suspended over a boiling cauldron, from which steam is constantly arising, filling the cave with a cloud of mist, which at times obscures the surface of the water.
It was evidently an active geyser at one time but later took on the characteristics of a hot spring probably as its vent became partially closed by geyserite and the steam found an exit elsewhere.
The bottom of the basin is covered with round geyserite nodules and pierced with two vent holes.
