Umno veteran Tun Abdul Ghafar Baba has expressed his support for a contest for the two top UMNO party posts despite the UMNO supreme council's "no contest" decision for the posts of UMNO President and Deputy President.
I hope Ghafar would not be accused by the UMNO-controlled mainstream media of "quite clearly and understandably in favour of a fractious contest at the May 11 Umno elections", an accusation which has been levelled against me for making the very same proposal as the former Deputy Prime Minister.
May be, Ghafar should advise Abdullah that he should formally propose at the next UMNO Supreme Council meeting that its "no contest" decision for the two top posts should be rescinded before more damage is done to the political legitimacy and democratic credentials of the new Prime Ministerial heir-appaent in Malaysia.

Ghafar has been in hospital since early this month, undergoing intensive care treatment for heart and lung complications.
And yesterday, not long after it was officially announced that Endon had passed away at 7.55am, the SMSes started to get around that Ghafar too had died and that there would be a joint national funeral.

In actual fact, Ghafar Baba was already regarded as too "old" and "unwell" to stand for the tenth general election, and this was why he was left out when the Malacca Chief Minister and state Barisan Nasional chairman, Datuk Abu Zahar Isnin last Friday announced the Barisan Nasional candidate line-up for Malacca.
However, three hours later, Ghafar Baba was reinstated by Mahathir as the Barisan Nasional candidate for the Batu Berendam parliamentary constituency, not because Ghafar Baba is really fit to stand for an eighth term as MP, but because Mahathir wants to be sure about winning every parliamentary seat for fear of losing two-thirds parliamentary majority!
During the Barisan Nasional 25th anniversary celebrations at the Bukit Jalil Stadium in Kuala Lumpur last month, Ghafar could not stand the strain and had to be rushed to hospital.
