Topic: Ghaunadaur

In the News (Mon 28 Dec 09)

The Temple of Fruit Yogurt. Ghaunadaur, That Which Lurks.
Although Ghaunadaur is a distinct entity unrelated to the tanar'ri lord Juiblex, the Faceless Lord, or the otherwise unnamed Elder Elemental God neither of the latter two powers is active in the Realms, and Ghaunadaur ha^ assumed both of their aspects within the crystal sphere of Realmspace.
Ghaunadaur's temples are sometimes located in the wilds of the Underdark, far from the influence of cities led by the Spider Queen's priests.
Ghaunadaur assuredly inflicts his wrath on any solid foolish enough to profane his place of power, and some believe that fate of the wizard Shond Tharovin was sealed when the would-be tyrant removed the Living Gem from the temple.

Lolth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Araushnee managed to imprison the other deity though, and roused to action she, Gruumsh, and her son Vhaeraun eventually brought to her cause a great alliance of many great and minor deities of the orcs, goblins and other goblinoids, kobolds, giants, giant kin, ogres, and other such creatures.
This army of deities, joined also by the savage deity Malar, the ice queen Auril and the primordial evil Ghaunadaur, marched on Arvandor, to be met in battle by Corellon and the rest of the Seldarine, including Araushnee's other child Eilistraee.
However in her goal to wreak horrible vengeance on Corellon and the Seldarine, it was through Ghaunadaur's example of regaining power through the worship of mortals, that Lolth returned herself to her former power and beyond it, regaining her divinity due to the following she gained from the dark-skinned elves on various worlds, especially Abeir-Toril.

Nevican believes that Lolth is a traitor for betraying Ghaunadaur when they attacked Arvandor so many millennium ago and despises anything to do with spiders and her.
The pure ignorance of the surface people of Ghaunadaur's power allows the drow to capture and sacrifice their innocence to the blood lust of his God's personality and thus is blessed by That Which Lurks when he does so.
Nevican grew up living, eating and drinking Ghaunadaur and was finally allowed to become an initiate when he reached the young age of 110.

Eilistraee, Vhaeraun, and Ghaunadaur remain independent of the Spider Queen's control, but none of them is strong enough to challenge her directly, and their mutual enmity precludes any possibility of alliance against her.
Ghaunadaur is a primordial evil who joined the other members of the anti-Seldarine in the assault on Arvandor.
Ghaunadaur is a fell, amorphous deity that has plagued the darkest reaches of the Realms since the dawn of time.

Ghaunadaur's followers are often heavily persecuted, though he and Lloth are on relatively good terms themselves (they often deal with each other when godly matters affect both).
Ghaunadaur's followers live with sentient molds, slimes, and other creatures of offal or organic decay, usually in the lower levels of a drow city, or near a large body of potable (drinkable) water.
Ghaunadaur's clerics favor tactics that delay, slow, or keep an enemy at bay while they work more sinister magicks at a safe distance.

The portal of the Dead Goddess was not created by Ghaunadaur, though it may be as old as he is. The magic used to create it must have been powerful, for after so long a period of time the portal continues to function perfectly.
The goddess may have been a contemporary of Ghaunadaur, and she may even have been his enemy.
The Dead Goddess was the mortal enemy of Ghaunadaur.

Ghaunadaur: It is ironic that this amorphous god's faith is even more of a threat than Vhaeraun's and yet is less noticed by Lloth's followers.
Ghaunadaur has a number of hidden faithful and even a few clergy in the city and nearby in the underdark.

The Temple of Fruit Yogurt. Eilistraee, the Dark Maiden.
Eilistraee's power ebbed with the death of many of her faithful in the Dark Disaster, and the rise of Lolth and Ghaunadaur among the dark elves marginalized the influence of the Lady of the Dance for millennia.
Eilistraee is unusually close with the human goddess of magic, Mystra; Qilue Veladorn, seventh of the Seven Sisters, serves both goddesses as Chosen of Mystra and as Chosen of Eilistraee.
The Dark Maiden hates the corruption and unredeemable evil that both Lolth and Ghaunadaur represent, and she mourns her brother's enduring cruelty and selfishness.

In any case, Ghaunadaur answers their prayers, and it is the Elder Eye’s patronage that grants them their foul magic.
There they have vile shrines to Ghaunadaur and to the Elder Elemental God, and there they not only have layers of rock concealing them from the searching eyes of the swanmays, and from the forays of the ormyrrs and deserters into the cults’ part of the Fen, but also wards protecting them from magical scrying.

Once all such beings worshiped Ghaunadaur, but it struck most of them mad in a fit of fury for some transgression---said by some to involve its failure to defeat Lolth shortly after her banishment from the Seldarine---and stole their intellects.
Most humans find the worship of Ghaunadaur disgusting, but there are secret, subterranean altars and cults to the Elder Eye all over Toril, particularly in the older and more degenerate lands of the southern Sword Coast, Thay, and Kara-Tur.

Given that "Lost" seems to imply "gods whose worship has declined significantly and who may or may not be dead", I might add the following deities to the list: Jergal and Ghaunadaur.
Ghaunadaur seems like a good candidate because he attracts only a few cultists, and he's dark, sinister, and evil.) Other possibilities include Silvanus (because of that PftF reference) and Shaundakul (although the latter's base was farther north, around Myth Drannor.) The five names from the computer game "Pool of Radiance" are interesting candidates as well.
