On the journey to Ghealdan, Ariella amused herself by sketching her surroundings on pieces of old parchment, and telling jokes to her father that caused even the wagon drivers to look around occasionally in surprise (and her father, more than once, to frown at her so deeply that Ariella was forced to censure herself silently).

The epidemic of breakbone fever which claimed the lives of several nobles, including the entire family of House Miraval and the wife and young daughter of Eilwyn of House Li'thrain earlier in the year 997, was discovered not to be a sickness at all, but the work of a poisoner.
The reason for this turmoil was the discovery - though long anticipated - that the beautiful young Saldaean wife of one of Ghealdan's oldest and most respected lords was with child, even though her husband had been away for several months on an embassy to Tear.
There were few who doubted the father, however, for it was clear that Orsini himself had been quite taken with Lady Maiza when she was introduced at court by her new husband.
