		Cannaregio, the tiny island designated for the ghetto lay adjacent to an iron foundry (campo gheto, the area where slags (Italian ghetta) were cooled), hence the name.
		Other etymologies suggested for the word derive from "getto," the Italian term for casting), the Griko Ghetonia (Γειτονία, neighborhood), the Italian borghetto for "small neighborhood" or the Hebrew word get (Hebrew: גט), literally a "bill of divorce."
