Bhutto was sworn in as Prime Minister of a coalition government on December 2, becoming at age thirty five the youngest person and also the first woman to head the government of a Muslim-majority state in modern times.
Bhutto was charged with corruption and faced a number of legal proceedings (the resolution of which seems to vary depending on opinion) in Pakistan.
Bhutto is currently (as of September 2004) based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where she cares for her children and her mother, who is suffering from Alzheimer's disease, and from where she travels around the world giving lectures and keeping in touch with the Pakistan Peoples Party's supporters.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- Benazir Bhutto's political opponents Saturday rushed to condemn her in the death of her estranged brother Murtaza, and a high court judge was appointed to investigate the bizarre gunfight that took his life in the posh Clifton Road neighborhood of Karachi.
Benazir Bhutto's father Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, a former Prime Minister and wealthy landowner, was toppled in a coup in 1979 and hanged two years later.
As the Prime Minister and her mother attended Murtaza's funeral in the Bhutto family home in Larkana, north of Karachi, the atmosphere seemed to be one of reconciliation, rather than domestic and political wrangling.

Ghinwa, floating a 14-point plan of amending the 1973 Constitution, demanded doing away with the entire concurrent list and all amendments brought in the Constitution from 1977 onwards and putting all criminal laws under provincial jurisdiction.
Ghinwa said provinces should be made masters of their revenue collection and spending, while the Centre should have right to income tax and customs in order to meet financial demands of the Army and the federal government.
Ghinwa said the president should be empowered to proclaim emergency only if an external threat existed and not in case of internal turmoil.
