The Ghirardelli Chocolate Company is a United States division of Swiss candy-maker Lindt and Sprüngli.
The company was founded in San Francisco, California in 1852 by Italian chocolatier Domingo Ghirardelli.
Ghirardelli once was one of the largest regional independent chocolate brands in the United States until it was bought by Lindt and Sprüngli in 1998.

In 1837, Ghirardelli moved to Uruguay, then moved again in 1838, this time to Lima, Peru, and established a confectionery, and began using the Spanish equivalent of his Italian name, Domingo.
Caught up in the gold rush, Ghirardelli spent a few months in the gold fields near Sonora and Jamestown, before deciding to become a merchant in Stockton.
Domingo Ghirardelli died In 1894 while on a trip to his birthplace in Italy.
