Gholamreza Takhti was born in Tehran on September 27, 1930, the fifth child of a working class family.
Realizing that Takhti was attaining the status of a legend, the Savak arranged for inclusion of Takhti in the 1964 Olympics and 1966 World Championships teams, hoping that if he failed to gain a medal, his popularity would diminish.
Takhti was the embodiment of that wonderful tradition of Iranian "Fotovat" which is a mixture of unabashed masculinity and socially conscious chivalry.

The late Gholamreza Takhti, Iran's wrestling hero and Olympics champion times over, joined the students in arousing the public to bypass the government to assist the suffering people of Bou'in-Zahra.
Not long after that event, Takhti's body was found in a hotel in Tehran and the cause of death was announced as a suicide as the government reports contradicted themselves, one said that he had suffocated himself to death, another said that he had injected himself with a deadly substance.
