[KFCC] A Chinese Ghost Story Review
Story: Ning Tsai-Shen (Leslie Cheung) is a roving tax collector that arrives in a small town but misfortune would have it that his tax documents are ruined.
Chinese Ghost Story manages to have a bit of everything in it, swordplay action with some horror-esque elements along with a love story and some Chinese humor that comes off a little strange; I still don’t get half the jokes.
These story genres are well blended together and non really take the forefront, a mixture of a ghost story and love story that works well together.

DVD Review - A Chinese Ghost Story   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
When I first heard that the "A Chinese Ghost Story" trilogy is coming to DVD I was cautiously ecstatic, especially so because I had heard that Media Asia remastered the movie for DVD and had given the soundtrack a Dolby Digital remix.
I was astounded that they even had plans for the imminent DVD release of "A Chinese Ghost Story", as the movie has always been put in second place by Media Asia and not even a laserdisc version is available.
Film conservation is almost non-existent in Hong Kong, making it extremely hard to find clean, unmarred film prints, which are needed to create a high quality transfer.

While the film is, of course, set in "the past", it is impossible to believe that the film-makers’ criticisms were not aimed directly at the Chinese government of the time.
A Chinese Ghost Story II opens with a couple of macabre scenes that prove, as far as the film’s overall tone is concerned, fairly misleading.
A Chinese Ghost Story II tries, like its predecessor, to build itself upon a love story, but generally fails, chiefly because while some of its characters do, pretty much of necessity, "fall in love", none of them seems to care very much who they are "in love" with.

In a case of mistaken identity (not the first in the film), he is imprisoned and about to be executed.
How she manages to be sexy, seductive, innocent, and confused, all while covered in ghost goo, is beyond me. So, cheesy special effects, awful pop music in Chinese, weird camera angles, and bizarre lenses, this movie has all the ingredients of a lasting classic.

A sombre blend of ghost story and romance, it is almost an arthouse version of Ghost but with the minimalism and mystery absent from a quick turn around the potter’s wheel.
Rivette’s film is almost the antithesis of commercial; keeping the audience at arm’s length, concealing clarity beneath layers of confusion.
It is an unsettling aspect of a film that goes out of its way to eschew the elements of a conventional ghost story.

The film is being marketed with his name, even though he is barely in the film for more than five minutes.
Even though the film is being pushed as Genevieve Joliffe's vision, as Hollywood is hungry to promote Women Directors' it would appear that the two (Chris and Jen) worked as a very strong team and Chris's contribution should not be ignored either or the talented cast and crew who largely worked for peanuts.
The film was well worth waiting for and is a nice addition to anyone's British genre films collection, although it could just as easily be viewed by fans of gritty emotional drama for all the fine acting and minimalism of the genre content.

"The Others" with Nicole Kidman reviewed by Steve Sailer for UPI; Alejandro Amenábar, ghost story
Before the film began, the 75 year old ladies in front of me were admiring how chipper one of their friends appeared despite her 94 years.
In the grand tradition of English it-was-a-dark-and-stormy-night suspense stories, the estate is cut off from the outside world by a sinister blanket of fog that thickens when Kidman tries to escape.
Yet, for people who see a more sane number of films annually, there are perfectly good reasons why the standard upfront method of developing empathy for the main character is indeed the standard.

 Urban Ghost Story (1998)
In this film’s need to specifically differentiate that it is an ‘urban’ ghost story comes the suggestion that all other ghost stories are by comparison rural in nature, something which could not entirely be said to be correct.
It uniquely translates the ghost story genre to a tenement locale in an inner-city ghetto, a locale that offers as much a whole new dwelling for the genre as it does a whole new social milieu.
Far more interestingly the film falls into a small sub-genre of supernatural films whose paranormal content hovers in a twilight zone of uncertainty between whether the manifestations can passed off with a rational/psychological explanation or are genuinely supernatural.

AAW: A Chinese Ghost Story Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
On the down side, the story is fittingly simple for a kids' movie; there is never much depth to the action, and much of the stuff in the ghost world that could have been scary or at least wild and whimsical ended up being weird to no end.
Its weakest points are the uninteresting ghosts, mutant things that are neither scary nor creative, and the colorful ghost city, which resembles a stylized carnival or neon-encrusted villa.

The reason Keith Gordon's new film Waking the Dead is so beautiful and satisfying is that it takes no shortcuts through the aforementioned wasteland.
Based on the novel by Scott Spencer, the movie is at once a romance, a mystery, a political drama, and a subtle ghost story.
Most notably, it robustly broaches a theme seldom explored in mainstream film, that of a young man's quest to regain his spiritual integrity in the wake of a soul mate's passing.

 Kubrick FAQ - The Shining
The Overlook, as seen in the film, doesn't exist in real life, the interiors of the Timberline Lodge are different to Kubrick's sets, however it is true to say the Overlook is an amalgamation of bits of real hotels located in the USA.
The film was shot and conceived for 1:1.85 ratio screening (and the camera viewfinders had the 1.85 framelines marked on them) This is the standard ratio that widescreen films in the US are projected in.
As Kubrick said: "One of the things that horror stories can do is show us the archetypes of the unconscious: we can see the dark side without having to confront it directly." The structure of a maze allows for just such an indirect confrontation of these dark forces.

Each story is more fantastic than the last, but there is one in particular which never crosses their lips or breathes a day of life, and is as old as time itself -- the death of a woman so many years before.
Ghost Story presents some interesting scenarios, but on the whole is an uneven concoction that boils in the kettle, but burns and scalds without letting us enjoy a fulfilling storyline.

A Chinese Ghost Story II (Sinnui Yauman II)
This is a great action packed adventure: Cheung's character is falsely imprisoned, escapes with the help of his cell mate, teams up with a ghost hunter, encounters a grisly monster, helps a family (one of whom resembles his lost ghostly love) to rescue their father, and challenges an evil Buddhist priest.
This sequel is not as 'haunting' as the first film, but there's lots of jumping and flying about inside houses, various monsters, good fight scenes, great humour (especially the "freezing the monster" and "stolen robe whilst bathing" scenes), and wonderful villains.
