Ghostscript - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ghostscript is a suite of free software based on an interpreter of the Adobe PostScript and Portable Document Format (PDF) page description languages.
Ghostscript has been ported to many operating systems, including most Unix and Unix-like systems, Mac OS X, VMS, Windows, OS/2, and Mac OS classic.
Two versions are released: the first for commercial use with the original AFPL license as AFPL Ghostscript, and another with the GNU General Public License as GPL Ghostscript.

ghostscript - GNU Project - Free Software Foundation (FSF)
Ghostscript was originally written by Peter Deutsch and is now maintained by a team of programmers; Raph Levien is the current maintainer.
GNU Ghostscript is a copyrighted work (artofcode LLC owns the copyright); it is distributed under the GNU General Public License.
Ghostscript is written entirely in C, with special care taken to make it run properly on systems of either byte order and of various word lengths.

Conditions to distribute Ghostscript in a commercial context   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Some versions of Ghostscript are distributed freely under the name AFPL Ghostscript or (for older versions) Aladdin Ghostscript; these versions are always distributed with a license, called the Aladdin Free Public License (also known as the AFPL), which permits AFPL Ghostscript to be redistributed freely under certain conditions.
Older versions of Ghostscript are distributed with a license called the GNU General Public License (also known as the "GNU License", the "GPL", or "copyleft"), which allowed distribution with commercial products under certain conditions.
One implication of this is that the GNU Ghostscript documentation must specify all properties of GNU Ghostscript on which the application relies; for example, if GNU Ghostscript has been modified by the addition of command line switches or language elements such as new operators, the documentation must describe any such additions that the application uses.

How to use Ghostscript   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Ghostscript is also used as a general engine inside other applications (for viewing files for example).
The command line to invoke Ghostscript is essentially the same on all systems, although the name of the executable program itself may differ among systems.
Ghostscript attempts to find an optimum balance between speed and memory consumption, but there are some cases in which you may get a very large speedup by telling Ghostscript to use more memory.

 GhostScript
Ghostscript is a programming language similar to Adobe Sys- tems' PostScript (tm) language, which is in turn similar to Forth.
It indicates to Ghostscript that the standard input is coming from a file or a pipe.
Ghostscript reads from stdin until reaching end-of-file, executing it like any other file, and then continues processing the command line.

 Ghostscript projects
MS Windows has a "language monitor" capability which would allow Ghostscript to be invoked seamlessly to process input files in any language Ghostscript could handle (currently PostScript and PDF) and for any printer for which Ghostscript had a driver.
Their work uses Ghostscript's 'xfont' interface, which is how Ghostscript interfaces to platform facilities such as the X and MS Windows font capabilities.
Note that this is necessary, but far from sufficient, for Ghostscript to allow simultaneous execution of a single Ghostscript interpreter instance by multiple threads: that is probably permanently out of the question.

Linux: Ghostscript. - Linux Printing   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
It is generally a year or so ahead of the free Ghostscript; at the moment, for example, it supports many color inkjets that the older Ghostscripts do not and has rather better PDF support.
The main free version of Ghostscript is GNU Ghostscript, and is simply an aged version of Aladdin ghostscript.
Typically, Ghostscript will be run by whatever filter you settle upon (I recommend Foomatic if your vendor didn't supply anything that suits you), but for debugging purposes it is often handy to run it directly.

Background information for new users of Ghostscript
Ghostscript is a copyrighted work (artofcode LLC owns the copyright); it is not shareware or in the public domain.
Ghostscript is written entirely in C (with some optional assembly-language accelerators for DOS platforms), with special care taken to make it run properly on systems of either byte order ("low-endian" and "high-endian") and of various word lengths.
Ghostscript's documentation, while not of commercial end-user quality, has been adequate for thousands of users (for many of whom English is a foreign language), so the answer to your question is very likely in it somewhere.

CC - UNIX Support - Software - Text Processing - Formatters - Ghostscript Notes
Ghostscript is distributed in the hope that it will be useful, but WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY.
When looking for the initialization files (ghost.ps, gfonts.ps, and statusd.ps), the files related to fonts, or the file for the 'run' operator, Ghostscript first tries opening the file with the name as given (i.e., using the current working directory if none is specified).
If you are running Ghostscript on a MS-DOS machine with a display that is not EGA/VGA compatible, you will need the appropriate.BGI file from the Borland Turbo C library.

AFPL Ghostscript for RISC OS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
AFPL Ghostscript is a a fully functional PostScript language interpreter available for most platforms.
As it stands Ghostscript needs support for long filenames and more than 77 files per directory so, if you have RISC OS 4 and an F+ format drive decide where you are going to keep Ghostscript and skip to step 3.
For problems specifically related to Ghostscript on RISC OS I suggest asking on the mailing list, or mail me, Graham Jones, and I may be able to help.

LWN: GNU and Ghostscript part ways
GNU Ghostscript - a free PostScript and PDF interpreter which lurks at the core of free print systems worldwide - is the result of several years worth of cooperation between its developers and the Free Software Foundation.
The difference in viewpoints between the FSF and the Ghostscript team have resulted in two issues which have, at this point, brought about the end of the GNU Ghostscript releases.
That announcement mentioned AFPL Ghostscript 5.50, which was set to become GNU Ghostscript 5.50 several months later; this mention violated the FSF's rules on information control and had to be corrected.

How to prepare a Ghostscript release
However, the eventual purpose of this document is to describe Ghostscript release procedures in enough detail that someone who knows little about Ghostscript but is generally familiar with the platform on which the procedure is being carried out can execute the procedures correctly.
Ghostscript as distributed also often includes executables or other packages for the Windows and MacOS environments, but artofcode does not always produce these, and this document does not discuss them.
As with the Ghostscript code, each package is released both with the AFPL and with the GPL; however, unlike the Ghostscript code, artofcode releases these versions simultaneously rather than with a one-version delay.
