On arriving back in France, the Battalion was placed into an area well away from the fighting, in the valley of the River Somme, half way from the front line to the coast.
Total Battalion casualties 1 killed, 0 died of wounds, 8 wounded (all by the British artillery firing short on 25/3/16).
The battalion parade at 11.30pm to proceed to the trenches, to carryout operations against hostile positions in Gommecourt Wood, village and park.

The 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles (1RGR) was formed in Hong Kong on 1st July 1994 on the amalgamation of the 6th Queen Elizabeth’s Own Gurkha Rifles and the 2nd King Edward’s VII Own Goorkhas (The Sirmoor Rifles).
The Battalion was initially stationed in Hong Kong leading up to the hand back and in 1996 moved back to UK to join 5th Airborne Brigade.
The Battalion is currently involved in OP HERRICK in Afghanistan and is due to be back in Brunei in the late autumn.

He's the security Guard here at CNN that I mentioned was in a Ghurka Battalion.
As he said, when his father was in the Ghurkas (he's apparently at least a 2nd Gen Ghurka) they really didn't pay much attention to the pay.
But in his own time the Ghurka troops tended to learn a bit more and become more "clever" as he called it.

I have read today from internet that Ghurka's (6th Battalion) and Turks had a fierce hand to hand fighting at Sari Bayir.
Ghurka's won but had to wihdraw as none of the neigboring battalions succeeded to reach Sari Bayir.
So I imagine to referred as "white Ghurka's" is a great compliment.

He was finally posted ERE to the 3rd Battalion, The Duke of Wellington's Regiment (TA) in 1950 before transferring to the Royal Army Ordnance Corps to complete his term of service as a Warrant Officer Class 1.
When Major Ken Gardner left the Battalion it was no surprise that John became Battalion 2IC in his place, a position he held with distinction until the Battalion was disbanded on re-organisation in 1967.
Ken returned to the 1st Battalion for his last six months where he ran a Sniper Cadre and was influential in constructing the role for the deployment of snipers in the Armoured Infantry Role.

I think that a Ghurka Battalion would be an extremely valuable assest to Australia, particularly with our engagement with SE Asia.
I thought there was one incident, where the Ghurka's were approached by a ute with a few militia and the Ghurka's withdrew, instead of holding the line against the inferior trained, armed militia.
We'd still have 2x battalions of excellent light infantery on tap with out the bleedin' hearts getting their noses out of joint...

Sneaky, you should read up on the Ghurka's before you say that, during the Falklands war the Argentinians were so terrified of facing the Ghurka's that they actually fled towards the Royal Marines.
For every act of valor that you can name by a Ghurka, I can name one equivalent by a US fighting man. And I won't have to look much further than the current conflict.
For every successful operation by a Ghurka unit that you can name, I can name two of equal or greater impact by a US unit.

The exception to that was the Kubo Valley Police Battalion, which had a 15” blade (which was sometimes blued).
