Luzzasco Luzzaschi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While he is best known as a madrigalist, he was also an accomplished organist and pedagogue (he was the mentor of Frescobaldi).
As a child he studied with Cipriano de Rore, and as an adult served as the court organist to Duke Alfonso II, where he did the bulk of his composition.
He was a skilled representative of the late Italian madrigal style, along with Palestrina, Wert, Monte, Lassus, Marenzio, Gesualdo and others.

His personal relationships were stormy, his wife deserted him, and he had an ill-fated love affair with a singer at the Ferrara court.
Wert was one of the leading 'virtuoso' madrigalists of the late sixteenth century, and the last of the great Flemings who settled in Italy.
Wert developed a fastidious attention to declaiming the texts he set, using a kind of choral recitation; he often favored brilliant virtuoso scoring with the three upper voices emphasised--in recognition of the talented court singers for whom he was writing; and his vocal lines are highly individual and dramatically angular in certain 'mannerist' works.

Giaches de Wert emigrated to Italy from Flanders as a boy singer in the household of Maria di Cardona, Marchesa of Padulla.
In 1570, Wert learned of his wife’s infidelity; she was forced to return to Novellara and later sent to prison after her plot to overthrow the Gonzaga was uncovered.
Despite a substantial corpus of sacred music in manuscripts from the basilica of Santa Barbara, Wert is known primarily as a composer of madrigals and occasional pieces.

Giaches de Wert (1535-1596) was a Flemish composer who spent most of his life in Italy.
There is nothing that particularly marks Wert as a composer of special importance in this period, but this recording makes a nice selection for the late 16th century madrigal.
Cipriano de Rore (c.1515-1565) was an earlier composer with an even greater influence on the madrigal during this period.

One of the last important fiamminghi in Italian service, Giaches de Wert died in Mantua 400 years ago.
As he has been overlooked by most musicological research of the last decade, we wish that this occasion will revive interest in de Wert and raise some important questions about late sixteenth-century music.
Giaches de Wert's life leads directly into the subject of migration of musicians from and to the Low Countries during the period c.1400-1600.

The composers represented here are Schütz (x2), Gagliano, d'India (x2), de Wert (x2), Giovanelli, Marenzio (x2), Melli, Gastoldi, Bernardi, Monteverdi, Casentino, Saracini, and Grandi.
The only drawback is that for this reissue the texts and translations have been cut, significantly reducing the point of what is basically a sung poetry recital.

The arioso type came into favor during the 17th century and was described as a style "gracefully embellished with ornaments appropriate to the thought," which refers to the recitative soliloquy exploited in Italy by Monteverdi, Cavalli, and others, based on earlier experiments by Florentine composers.
Choral (or "chordal") recitative had been successfully used by Giaches de Wert, Monteverdi, and others aiming at a recitative style in full five-part harmony.
On the operatic stage, recitative ranged from rapid speech-style declamation to a melodious arioso, which was sometimes in the form of an expressive lament.

Following the lasting success of their Monteverdi, Gesualdo, Marenzio and Sigismondo recordings, they now turn to the Fleming closely related to the courts of Ferrara and Mantua, Giaches de Wert, who paved the way to the renovation of the madrigal that would later be firmly established by Monteverdi and Sigismondo d’India.
For this recording Claudio Cavina has chosen the lovely madrigals that Wert composed on the poems from Jerusalem Delivered by Tasso and Il Pastor Fido by Guarini, which are taken from his 7th, 8th and 11th Books of Madrigals.
