Marcello Sorce Keller - Gian Francesco Malipiero
Gian Francesco Malipiero figures among those composers who throughout their lives have not only composed, as anyone would expect of professional musicians of his kind, but also written and talked profusely, as it were, about art and music and, more specifically, about their own music and musical attitudes.
Malipiero had already achieved maturity in the music he wrote three, if not more, decades ago, both from a formal and a spiritual point of view; all his later work seems aimed at deepening his primary creative impulse.
Undoubtedly Malipiero had a good point in saying that this abused trick of transposing melodies or melodic fragments up and down, from one pitch level to another, is a cheap one indeed.

Malipiero’s vast output includes 17 symphonies, 8 string quartets, a huge amount of orchestral music, many concertos as well as 35 operas, most of which are still little-known nowadays.
Malipiero’s operas are rarely heard, let alone recorded, though they may be considered as his most original achievements.
It seems that Malipiero’s attitude during the fascist period in Italy was rather ambiguous, as was the younger Petrassi’s.

 G. F. MALIPIERO - BIOGRAPHY [EN]
Born into a family of musicians of aristocratic origin, he was the grandson of the opera composer Francesco Malipiero (1824–87) and the uncle of Riccardo Malipiero.
Malipiero sought to appease Mussolini by dedicating to him his next opera GiulioCesare, but the dictator, now preoccupied with his Abyssinian campaign, refused the composer’s next request for an audience.
In 1921 Malipiero was appointed professor of composition at the Parma Conservatory, but he resigned three years later, by which time he had bought (late in 1922) the house in Asolo that remained his home until his death.

Born in Venice, the grandson of the opera composer Francesco Malipiero, he was prevented by family troubles from pursuing his musical education in a consistent manner.
After stopping counterpoint lessons with Marco Enrico Bossi, Malipiero continued study on his own by copying out early Italian music of such composers as Claudio Monteverdi and Girolamo Frescobaldi, beginning a lifelong commitment to Italian music of that period.
After settling in the little town of Asolo for good in 1921, Malipiero began the editorial work for which he would become best known, a complete edition of all of Monteverdi's oeuvre, from 1926 to 1942, and after 1952, editing much of Antonio Vivaldi's concerti at the Istituto Italiano Antonio Vivaldi.

 Festival di Trani: II edizione
Amongst those Italian composers of the so-called “80s generation”, Gian Francesco Malipiero is recognizable for his originality and for his rich and fanciful talent in composing.
While he has not attained the popularity of Respighi, his music has been admired by various important Italian and foreign colleagues: Luigi Dallapiccola defines him as “the most important personality that Italy has produced since the death of Verdi”.
Malipiero was, however, an unsettling character and, one the most difficult aspects of his personality is, without a doubt, his immeasurable creative fecundity which represents a real obstacle to the evaluation of his works...

Ab 1910 lebte Malipiero in einem Haus in Asolo nahe Venedig, musste jedoch 1917, bedingt durch die Kriegshandlungen, mit seiner Familie nach Rom fliehen, wo er bis 1921 blieb.

(This group is also represented on an earlier Stradivarius release of Malipiero’s eight Dialogues.) All of this music vividly demonstrates Malipiero’s uncanny and idiosyncratic way of blending as well as setting off against each other the incisive sonorities of winds and strings.
The earlier pieces, like the bumptious Epodi e giambi for violin, oboe, viola, and bassoon, have a tender and less taciturn character than the somber 1966 Endecatode (Malipiero was very adept at inventing his own nomenclature, too), some 20 minutes of gnarled acidity and moody melancholy in 11 brief movements for 14 instruments and percussion.
The two serenades (1959 and 1961, respectively) for 10 instruments give a prominent role to the hollowly plaintive yet self-important growl of the bassoon, which is occasionally but quite effectively backed up by the quiet tinkle of the celeste.
