 | | (This group is also represented on an earlier Stradivarius release of Malipiero’s eight Dialogues.) All of this music vividly demonstrates Malipiero’s uncanny and idiosyncratic way of blending as well as setting off against each other the incisive sonorities of winds and strings. |
 | | The earlier pieces, like the bumptious Epodi e giambi for violin, oboe, viola, and bassoon, have a tender and less taciturn character than the somber 1966 Endecatode (Malipiero was very adept at inventing his own nomenclature, too), some 20 minutes of gnarled acidity and moody melancholy in 11 brief movements for 14 instruments and percussion. |
 | | The two serenades (1959 and 1961, respectively) for 10 instruments give a prominent role to the hollowly plaintive yet self-important growl of the bassoon, which is occasionally but quite effectively backed up by the quiet tinkle of the celeste. |
