		Gianni Morbidelli is not the youngest Formula 1 driver, nor is he the best-known of the young generation, but he is making a good impression.
		Growing up surrounded by competition activity Gianni decided to begin kart racing when he was 13 and he was soon recruited by the factory teams and scored over 50 karting victories.
		In the same way as being branded a rich kid, when Gianni became a Ferrari driver, critics suggested that he was only in F1 because of his connection to the famed team.

		Hot from his 1989 Italian F3 title Gianni Morbidelli was drafted in by Scuderia Italia to race in Phoenix alongside Andrea De Cesaris.
		Ferrari itself were in turmoil too in 1991, Gianni literally being thrown in at the deep end at the very wet Australian GP after Ferrari team manager Claudio Lombardi fired Alain Prost for calling his 643 a truck.
		Gianni did well to score a half point in the rain-shortened race but it didn't provide him with the second Ferrari seat for 1992.

		Italian racer Gianni Morbidelli, who last drove in Formula One in 1997, is firming as favourite for the sole remaining vacancy in the field for the Qantas Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 1-4.
		The 33-year-old Morbidelli, whose best result in 67 GPs in the '90s was third place at Adelaide's final GP in November 1995, may be named by the end of the week to partner Spanish teenage rookie Fernando Alonso in the Minardi team now owned by Australian entrepreneur Paul Stoddart.
		Morbidelli has raced for several F1 teams, most recently the Swiss outfit Sauber four years ago.

		Morbidelli originally signed a testing contract with Ferrari at the age of 21 and made his Formula 1 debut shortly after his 22nd birthday.
		Gianni graduated from karts into Formula 3 at the start of the 1987 season and eventually clinched the Italian title two years later.
		He then continued through Formula 3000, making his debut as stand-in for Emanuele Pirro at Interlagos in 1990 at the wheel of a Scuderia Italia Dallara.
