Suddenly Gianni thunders out "However...!" The relatives jump to their feet and the two lovers change their tune: perhaps they will still be married in May! The relatives crowd round Gianni with great anxiety, as he stands still in the center of the room, motioning them to be quiet and gazing straight ahead.
Gianni replies that if he should leave a great deal to the church he would seem to be making amends for having stolen his wealth, and again the relatives commend his wisdom and sagacity.
Gianni chases the relatives out of what is now his house, trying to recover some of the loot as they make their way toward the door, loaded down with as much as they can carry.

In Dante's Inferno, Canto XXX (lines 22-44), Gianni Schicchi -- who actually existed, as did the Donati family -- is found with other forgers and cheats in the Eighth Circle of Hell, naked, berserk, and tearing with his teeth the flesh of the other denizens of the underworld.
Schicchi points out that they'll have the comfort of the inheritance, prompting Zita to bitterly inform him that they've been disinherited, and will he please remove himself and his daughter, as she will not have her nephew marry a girl without a dowry.
Schicchi returns, carrying some of the loot he managed to grab back from the Donatis.
