  At-A-Glance Film Reviews: Giant (1956)
Giant's reputation as James Dean's last film -- he died a few days after finishing his work on it -- is at least as large as its 202 minute running time.
Giant is, essentially a soap western, chronicling the lives of a few characters in a slowly changing society over the course of 25 years.
This is one of the earliest films to deal with racism in such depth.

Sheb Wooley - Music Downloads - Online
Amid all of his film work, Wooley continued recording and writing songs.
He later recorded an album of folk-style material that was released in the wake of the MGM wide-screen epic blockbuster movie How the West Was Won, but this also failed to catch on with the public.
His film work continued during this time, and it was because of movie and television commitments that he was unable to record the song "Don't Go Near the Indians." Instead, former movie cowboy/singer Rex Allen recorded it and had a hit with it.

  THE IRON GIANT
Hogarth watches an old sci-fi/horror film on TV that (along with its suspenseful music) may be a bit scary for kids (especially when a disembodied brain begins crawling across the floor -- although it, like the rest of the film, is all animated).
The sight of the Giant being shocked by an electrical substation and adjoining power lines (along with his "screams") may be unsettling to some kids as might the scene moments later when several towers fall and nearly hit Hogarth.
The entire ending sequence where the Giant battles the Army men who have opened fire on him, as well as the thought and sight of a quickly approaching nuclear missile and finally a moment where Hogarth appears to be dead (he's not) may be suspenseful and/or frightening to some kids.

At the turn of the 20th century, German sinologist Wilhelm Grube called China a sleeping giant shackled by its Confucian past, destined to perish unless it was able to shake itself free.
When film production resumed in the late 1970s, a culturally starved nation flocked to the cinema, and it was here that modern filmmaking in China began.
While the film was criticized incessantly, there were enough elements to bring in the numbers: curiosity, famous faces, gift tickets from companies and, most importantly, a young generation that sees movies as a way of enjoying life.

 CultureDose.net - George Stevens - 1956 - Giant Movies Review
Historically, Giant represents a genre from a bygone era that won't be duplicated and marks the last film of icon James Dean, who was killed a couple days after completing his scenes.
Giant is a huge production, but remains forever transfixed to the fifties (like many other Stevens' projects) and can now be looked at as the inspiration for the television mini-series, with its cardboard characters chosen solely for symbolic purposes.
Chronicling two generations of Texans beginning in the 1920's, the film clearly preaches for women's liberation and against racial discrimination, and all its major plot points are signaled well in advance to give “sophisticated” audiences an “I knew it” experience.

 Giant (1956)
Based on a novel by Edna Ferber, Giant is an appropriately Texas-sized western/generational saga that parallels familial evolution with the changing socio-economic nature of the United States over an approximately 30-year period from the 1920s through the film's present, and by extension, a turn of the (20th) century mentality segueing into a more contemporary outlook.
Unlike most sprawling films, the cast of characters in Giant actually turns out to be relatively small, we always have a clear idea of who each character is, and every event leads to the next in a very tightly-written, logical manner.
Giant is extremely engaging in its soap-operatic family drama, but just as captivating for its subtle handling of important social themes.

 Giant
Director George Steven's "Giant" (1956) is, well… one heck of a giant film experience, full of lusty and intensely drawn characters that speak to the boisterous Texans that populated Edna Ferber's best selling novel.
The film stars Elizabeth Taylor as Leslie Lynnton, a rather priggish -- if drop dead gorgeous -- young woman, whose pending marriage to Sir David Karfrey (Rod Taylor, in an early and fleeting on screen appearance) is thwarted by the sudden appearance of Jordon Benedict (Rock Hudson).
Accidentally befriending Jordon's jealous rival, the impoverished Jett Rink (James Dean in his last role), Leslie is torn between Jett's lilting way with the Mexican natives that populate the ranch and whom she feels a kinship towards, and, Jordon's racist view of the Mexican's place as inferior to whites among society.
