Public Arts : Giant Sand / Band of Blacky Ranchette (2005-09-01)
The Band of Blacky Ranchette was asking to be born, but it had to wait just a couple more years.
The band has continued to be a venue for a broad circle of friends to have a blast making music together.
Giant Sand is the quite likely the longest running Tucson band from the early 80's and is the only band from that period still making records.

Giant (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Giant is an American Rock band that was formed in 1987 by brothers Dann and David Huff.
The band only scored one major hit, the 1990 power ballad "I'll See You In My Dreams", but it's "I'm A Believer" that is for its supporters, the emblematic title.
The band would resurface in 2000 and release the album III in late 2001.

Interview - Liner Notes from the Truck CD
This relatively short recording time was not, in itself, unusual for Giant, The band would normally reckon to spend around three weeks recording an album, which considering the complexity of the music was far from comfortable.
But Giant were never a band to choose the comfortable option - from the beginning, they had ploughed their own furrow with a determination bordering on obsession, and by the mid-seventies they were beginning to reap the rewards, especially in America and parts of Europe.
Giant co-opted Sutcliffe to perform this mock interview, then spliced excerpts between the songs themselves, which stand as the band's responses to his questions.

 Gentle Giant
The band is still taking the same complex, tweaked path they always have, but unlike on much of the last couple of albums, it sounds to me that the band really took the time to think its ideas through before committing them to tape.
The band was apparently contractually obligated to get the album out at a specific time, but instead of taking the time to go into the studio and mull over ideas they might hammer out, they instead kept touring (it's hard to blame them, as it was by most accounts their most successful tour yet).
The greatest thing about this album, and consequently the greatest thing about the band's live abilities, is that (unlike so so so many other bands of all kinds) they know how to preserve the essence of their studio recordings while changing much of the form for live performance.

Giant Squid plays a warm up show with the new line up at Beerland in Austin, TX on August 31st with friends, LIONS OF TSAVO and then heads off to Colorado for the South Park Music festival where they will play the Purevolume.com showcase on September 9th.
The band’s newest members should be nice and prepared by then, for once Giant Squid returns home, they will be opening for the ground breaking band, ISIS, who, taking a night off from their tour with TOOL, will be at the legendary Austin venue, Emo’s.
Giant Squid’s debut record on The End Records drops August 22, and was engineered by legendary heavy music guru, Billy Anderson (NEUROSIS, MELVINS, HIGH ON FIRE) and was produced by the highly eccentric, Jason Rufuss Sewell, owner of Nebulost Productions recording studio in Austin.

Giant Sand: Chore Of Enchantment ---Ink Blot Magazine
Giant Sand really functions more like a family business than a band, one in which whoever happens to be around helps out behind the till and anyone who's ever played is welcome to return.
Gelb's been guided by chance ever since, zigging and zagging across a rock 'n' roll landscape bounded by the southwestern desert, which is the soil that nourishes his sun-baked creative vision, and Europe, where his band Giant Sand's imported-beer status has sustained enough of a fan base to pay his bills.
Giant Sand were originally a fairly straight-ahead rock band, but after he picked up those dice Gelb began to incorporate improvisational elements into his guitar playing (which got wilder) and writing (which became more surreal).

A Review of The Phantom Tollbooth
Some background: Gentle Giant was an influential progressive rock band born in the musically rich atmosphere of late '60’s England.
CD 3 is a compilation of post-Giant solo work by various members of the band, including three new compositions that reunite four members of the band (“Home Again,” “Moog Fugue,” and “Move Over”) and unreleased tracks from Simon Dupree and the Big Sound (a '60’s R and B combo that featured members of Gentle Giant).
Gentle Giant the band is a pleasant memory now, but these two fine projects bring the memory into focus much better, and provide fitting closure to the career of a fine and original band.
