Arnoux's beaked whales are known to enter pack-ice and may live very close to the ice edge in summer, but are likely to move away in winter (Carwardine, 1995).

One toothed whale, the sperm whale, sometimes known as a cachalot, is quite large: The male grows to a length of 18.3 m (60 ft), and the female grows to a length of 12.2 m (40 ft).
The life span varies: For small toothed whales such as the beluga it is thought to be about 30 years; for larger toothed cetaceans such as the sperm whale it is up to 70 years; and baleen whales probably live for as long as 80 years.
In captivity, whales and dolphins show considerable capacity for learning and a well-developed sense of play and of care giving; but because it is extremely difficult to observe cetaceans in their natural state, little is known of their social interaction and communication in the wild.

Beaked whales are big animals, and upon seeing one stranded, most bystanders have no idea what it is. They often ask whether it's a giant dolphin.
In the other 20 odd beaked whale species the females rarely have any teeth, and the males are distinguished by either 2 or 4 teeth in one of several peculiar arrangements.

 Save the Whales
Whales and dolphins produce sounds in a variety of ways: in the nasal passages of the head by varying the opening of the nasal plug; by forcing air through a partially-opened blowhole; and from the larynx.
These sound waves enter the whale's head and may be carried as vibrations through the lower jaw to the inner ear or bulla.
The bulla is free floating, surrounded by a bubbly foam, and is not attached to the skull.

Odontocetes bear teeth — typically numerous and peglike, although sometimes modified, as in the single tusk of the narwhal or the odd, fanglike lower teeth of the beaked whales.
Some baleen whales, most famously the humpack whales, are known for the strange and complex songs they produce; their function is not clear, but unlike toothed whales, baleen whales do not use their songs for echolocation.
These include the baleen whale families Balaenopteridae (rorqual whales, including the blue whale) and Balaenidae (right whales), and the toothed whale families Delphinidae (dolphins and killer whales), Physeteridae (sperm whales), Monodontidae (belugas and narwhals), Phocaenidae (porpoises), and Ziphiidae (beaked whales).

Sun.Star Davao - Matina Aplaya 'dolphin' could be a rare whale   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
THE giant dolphin that beached and died at Matina Aplaya Tuesday night could be a beaked whale and not a bottlenose dolphin (Torpsius truncatus) as earlier theorized because of its size and the position of its dorsal fin (the fin on its back that is visible above water when the creature swims near the surface).
Other beaked whales that are sometimes mistaken as a southern bottlenose are the Arnoux's beaked whale, the Curvier beaked whale and the Baird's beaked whale.
The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society has no estimate of its present population and the threats to its population because it is very rarely seen and therefore not studied.

Sonar to Blame for Beached Whales, Report Says (washingtonpost.com)
The IWC report adds weight to theories that sonar harms the giant sea mammals, a hypothesis that has been disputed by the military and by the oil and gas industry, which uses the technology to search for energy reserves.
The report cited examples of bizarre and self-destructive whale behavior that seemed to have been caused by military sonar, such as a mass stampede of 200 melon-headed whales into shallow water in Hawaii earlier this month during a U.S.-Japanese naval training exercise.
Another is that the signals confuse whales in deep water, forcing them to surface quickly, causing rapid decompression and a form of the bends.

When researchers performed autopsies on beaked whales that stranded themselves in the Canary Islands September 24, 2002, they discovered signs consistent with decompression sickness in humans: gas-bubble lesions in blood vessels and tissues.
Jepson and colleagues in the U.K. compared the Canary Island beaked whale autopsy results to those of more than 2,000 marine mammals that had stranded themselves in England between 1992 and 2003 and found gas-bubble lesions in a handful of the dolphins, which may or may not be related to sonar, he said.
