  Peters' Mouse Lemur - Biocrawler
Peters' Mouse Lemur (Microcebus myoxinus), also known as the Pygmy Mouse Lemur, is the smallest of the mouse lemurs and the smallest primate in the world, only weighing around 30 grams (roughly 1 ounce).
Its small size and nocturnal nature made it difficult to locate for over a century, and was rediscovered in the Kirindy forest in western Madagascar in 1993.
They rest during the day, and have a tendency to sleep in the open, which increases the risk of predation; although this danger is somewhat mitigated by sleeping alone.

New lemur species discovered in Madagascar
Biologists have discovered two new species of lemur, endangered primates that are ancestral to monkeys and apes, and that exist now only on the island.
The first discovery was made when scientists analysed morphological, genetic and behavioural data from distinct populations of what they thought was the giant mouse lemur.
The second new species (pictured) is a mouse lemur, identified by morphological and genetic analyses by Robert Zingg of Zoo Zürich in Switzerland.

 Thoughts from Kansas: New Lemurs!
The first new lemur was discovered when scientists analyzed and compared morphological, genetic and behavior data from distinct populations of the giant mouse lemur, Mirza coquereli.
The genetic analyses to determine the taxonomic status of the two Mirza populations unexpectedly revealed the existence of a new species of mouse lemur, Microcebus lehilahytsara.
Genetic analyses also revealed that this new mouse lemur from Andasibe, a popular tourist site in the eastern rainforest, diverged more than 2 million years ago from other mouse lemur populations in the region.

Lemurs are part of the primates and belong to the prosimians because they show some primitive traits compared to further evolved primates such as monkeys, apes and humans.
Other lemurs such as the Ringtailed Lemur (Lemur catta) in Berenty or Bemaraha, the Black-and-white Ruffed Lemur (Varecia variegata vaiegata) in Manombo or the Alaotran Gentle Lemur (Hapalemur griseus alaotensis) at Lake Alaotra serve as umbrella species in their respective regions and natural habitats.
Physical Traits: Goodman's Mouse Lemur is barely bigger than a mouse (it is one of the smaller Mouse lemurs), has a white stripe on its nose, maroon and orange fur, turning creaming-white on the ventral side, with short, rounded ears.

 Lemurs - Mgias
Lemurs are primitive primates that became extinct in the rest of the world some 30 million years ago and survive only in Madagascar.
All the sub-fossil giant lemurs are diurnal and folivorous except for the Daubentoniidae family or extinct nocturnal aye-aye.
Lemurs we see in Madagascar today are smaller than the extinct ones, and range from 25 grams to up to 8 kilograms, while the extinct lemurs ranged from 10 to over 100 kilograms.

Lemurs belong to the sub-order Strepsirhini together with bushbabies, lorises, and pottos which -- like the original lemurs -- are nocturnal, insectivorous primates characterized by a small body, a long nose, and large eyes.
Currently all lemurs are endangered species, due mainly to habitat destruction (deforestation) and hunting.
Lemurs are found naturally only on the island of Madagascar, and some smaller surrounding islands, including the Comoros (where it is likely they were introduced by humans).

The Giant Mouse-lemur is nocturnal, and they are active throughout the year; unlike other mouse-lemurs they do not hibernate, and instead they feed on homopteran larvae to sustain themselves.
The Giant Mouse-lemur is heavily preyed upon by owls, as well as the Madagascar Buzzard (Buteo brachypterus).

Lemurs also turn out, as expected, to have a tendency to explore their environments with their noses-to choose ripe fruit, for example, by smell rather than by appearance.
Lemurs, in fact, turn out to be as diverse as or even more so than the higher primates in most aspects of their behavior and ecology.
The ancestral lineages of the extinct lemurs obviously survived these earlier vicissitudes, and there is no reason to believe that on their own the most recent (rather mild) round of climate changes should have had a fatal effect on several lineages simultaneously.
