		Gibellina venne distrutta dal terremoto che nel 1968 colpisce duramente la valle del Belice.
		I ruderi sono ancora visibili (seguire le indicazioni Ruderi di Gibellina, 18 km a est di Gibellina Nuova), in gran parte coperti da un grande "velo" di cemento solcato da crepe in corrispondenza delle vie del vecchio tracciato urbano (è Cretto, opera di Burri).
		La Nuova Gibellina è stata costruita seguendo un'idea molto particolare: rendere la città una sorta di museo permanente con sculture disseminate per le vie ed edifici che divenissero essi stessi opere d'arte.

		GIBELLINA - On the night between 14 and 15 January 1968, Gibellina was totally destroyed by the earthquake that devastated the Belice area.
		After the odyssey of its reconstruction, the new town today stands on a flat area 18 km from the old one, seen as a living testimony to the tragedy of this land.
		Even the debris of the old town has been turned into a huge sculpture: the so-called "Ruderi di Gibellina" covered by Alberto Burri with a thick layer of concrete, a dazzling white blanket spread over the side of the mountain sculpting the landscape and symbolising the human compassion in the face of the catastrophe.

		i recai a Gibellina per la prima volta nell’86: fu una visita molto breve, giusto il tempo di dare una rapida occhiata al paese e di fissare sulla pellicola alcune immagini.
		Lasciai Gibellina dunque con l’immagine di un luogo desolato e desolante, incompiuto, in bilico tra accademia e sub-cultura, nel quale l’interruzione violenta e drammatica della sua storia impediva lo storicizzarsi, nella cultura dei suoi abitanti,della sua nuova realtà, essendo mancato quel continuum culturale tra passato e presente che della storia è alla base.
