Gigabyte - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This measure can be abbreviated as GiB (gibibyte) to avoid ambiguity, as defined in IEC 60027-2.
A terabyte is either equal to 1024 gigabytes or to 1000 gigabytes depending on the usages.
To clarify the distinction between decimal and binary prefixes, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), a standards body, in 1997 proposed short unions of the International System of Units (SI) prefixes with the word "binary".

This is the definition most often used in computer engineering, computer science, computer programming, and almost all computer operating systems.
It has been suggested that this measure can be abbreviated as GiB (gibibyte) to avoid ambiguity, as defined in IEC 60027-2 but is seldomly done.
Likewise, a terabyte is either equal to 1024 gigabytes or to 1000 gigabytes depending on the usages.

 Talk:gigabyte - Wiktionary
the rewording "imprecisely, a gibibyte" is strictly correct, but it wasn't what I was going after.
The point is that, in the usual case that people care more about the order of magnitude than the exact quantity, "gigabyte" is the term thrown around.
In such usage it means "either a gigabyte or a gibibyte, don't care which." I would suspect that a fair number of people who use the term this way know that there is a distinction but aren't familiar with the term "gibibyte".

The Old New Thing : How much is that gigabyte in the window?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
A kibibyte (KiB) is 1024 bytes, a mebibyte (MiB) is 1024 KiB, and a gibibyte (GiB) is 1024 MiB.
If I ever hear someone say "gibibyte" I will either assume they have a speech impediment, or are talking to a two year old in baby speak.
For example, a 2^30-byte drive (1 gibibyte --ptewy--) and a 10^10-byte drive (1 gigabyte) are argued to be close to the same size but you can't combine them in a RAID system.

There is 1000 mibibytes in a gibibyte, but 1024 megabytes in a gigabyte.
It assumes that Gibibytes are 1000 MEGAbytes, not 1000 MIBIbytes.
Actually, a gigabyte is 1000 megabytes and a gibibyte is 1024 megabytes.

The IEC recommends that this unit should instead be called a gibibyte (abbreviated GiB), as it conflicts with SI units used for bus speeds and the like.
As a result of this confusion, the unadorned term gigabyte is useful only where just one digit of precision is required.
bytes would be called a ''gibibyte'' (GiB) while the use of gigabyte is deprecated in this context.

In their justification for the gibibyte the IEC say there is confusion in the various fields, which is true.

Hard drive spac e...? at ResellerRatings   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
Microsoft's "gigabyte" is 1,073,741,824 bytes, thus it subtracts seven percent from the total of the drive.
But, Microsoft uses a different way to measure gigabytes(they're actually gibibytes) so that's why you "lost" some 6GB from your hard drive.
The funny(and confusing) thing is that while microsoft uses gibibytes, they actually call or label them as 'gigabytes' and that throws alot of people off.

1GB can mean either "gigabyte" or "gibibyte", depending on who's saying it.
Gibibyte: the 'bi' in there is for binary, so it's binary style (2^10 instead of 1000) - 1,073,741,824 bytes (1024 mebibytes*)
and most computer users mean gibibyte when they say GB (even though they call it a "gigabyte" anyway).

Google for the usage of the above and you'll find the following ratios for the numbers of pages that use the two forms:
