		the rewording "imprecisely, a gibibyte" is strictly correct, but it wasn't what I was going after.
		The point is that, in the usual case that people care more about the order of magnitude than the exact quantity, "gigabyte" is the term thrown around.
		In such usage it means "either a gigabyte or a gibibyte, don't care which." I would suspect that a fair number of people who use the term this way know that there is a distinction but aren't familiar with the term "gibibyte".

		A kibibyte (KiB) is 1024 bytes, a mebibyte (MiB) is 1024 KiB, and a gibibyte (GiB) is 1024 MiB.
		If I ever hear someone say "gibibyte" I will either assume they have a speech impediment, or are talking to a two year old in baby speak.
		For example, a 2^30-byte drive (1 gibibyte --ptewy--) and a 10^10-byte drive (1 gigabyte) are argued to be close to the same size but you can't combine them in a RAID system.

		There is 1000 mibibytes in a gibibyte, but 1024 megabytes in a gigabyte.
		It assumes that Gibibytes are 1000 MEGAbytes, not 1000 MIBIbytes.
		Actually, a gigabyte is 1000 megabytes and a gibibyte is 1024 megabytes.

		But, Microsoft uses a different way to measure gigabytes(they're actually gibibytes) so that's why you "lost" some 6GB from your hard drive.
		The funny(and confusing) thing is that while microsoft uses gibibytes, they actually call or label them as 'gigabytes' and that throws alot of people off.

		Google for the usage of the above and you'll find the following ratios for the numbers of pages that use the two forms:
		kibibyte vs. kilobyte: 1:60 (impressively high, I admit) mebibyte vs. megabyte: 1:234 gibibyte vs. gigabyte: 1:2082
		I strongly suspect that the vast majority of the former set of pages are of the form "use this instead of kilo!", but perhaps I really have been asleep while much of the computing world converted.

		FYI, this is common practice with most forms of memory.
		Actually, the GiB is in the process of being corrupted to mean 10^9 as well.
