The Association is one of the ten (possibly sixth) oldest football associations in the world.
This cup, as the name suggests, was donated to the Association by the Merchants of Gibraltar to be played on an annual basis by teams form the local civilian community who registered with the Association.

The records, consisting mostly of minute books from GFA committee meetings, cover the period from 1896 to 1968.
The Gibraltar Archives would like to encourage private individuals as well as local sports clubs and associations to bring in similar records, including photographs, so that this area of our sporting and social history can be better preserved for future generations of Gibraltarians.

A programme of events is planned to take place in Gibraltar during the weekend of 28–30 October 2005 to commemorate the close historic links between Gibraltar and Nelson’s victory, the UK defence minister Adam Ingram has said.
Replying to a question from John Hayes MP Mr Ingram said that in addition to a traditional service of remembrance at the Trafalgar cemetery, these will include a Nelson exhibition, Beating the Retreat and reception, and a Royal Navy Ceremonial Guard Mount at the Governor’s residence.
In the United Kingdom, the Royal Navy is organising a special programme of events for this year, which is being coordinated with other events as part of the Sea Britain and Trafalgar Festival initiatives to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.
