In 1958 the GDF became The Gibraltar Regiment.
In 1971 HM The Queen approved the granting of Colours to the Regiment which were presented on 25 September 1971 and on the same day the Regiment also received the Freedom of the City.
On 28 April 1999, Her Majesty The Queen bestowed the Royal Title on the regiment after which it was known as The Royal Gibraltar Regiment.

It was formed in 1958 from the Gibraltar Defence Force as an infantry unit, with an integrated artillery troop.
Initially a reserve force, on the withdrawal of the British Army garrison from the colony in 1991, it was placed on the British Army's regular establishment.
In addition to this, the regiment, thanks to its artillery heritage, is also permitted to fire gun salutes from the Tower of London, something that is traditionally done only by the Honourable Artillery Company.

The Regiment was ordered to camp about a mile west of Alexandria, Virginia, and attached to the command of Gen. John B. Slough, Military Governor of Alexandria, and its first actual military duty was to consist of doing patrol and picket duty in that city.
The Regiment was removed to the vicinity of Washington for garrison duty in the Forts on January 12, 1863, and the health of the Regiment improved greatly.
This regiment had been in service about 22 months and now after a terrible night march were about to receive their baptism of fire in battle - an event that was to carry death into its ranks, with scarcely a parallel during the war.
