Gibson Firebird - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Gibson Guitar Corporation released several new types of guitars during the 1950s to combat Fender's successful and modern guitars, such as the Stratocaster.
Gibson had success with the Les Paul in the 1950s, but their other releases (Flying V and Explorer) were failures.
It was the first Gibson solid-body to use neck-through construction, wherein the neck extended to the tail end of the body, to which extension pieces or "wings" were attached.

Gibson Guitar Corporation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gibson was considered a bit eccentric and there has been some question over the years as to whether or not he suffered from some sort of mental illness.

 Gibson - WikiRadish
The Les Paul was changed into the Gibson Les Paul Custom, which became the Gibson SG in 1961, but returned in the late 1960s after it was taken up by players such as Eric Clapton and Peter Green.
Other instrument manufacturers which are owned by Gibson include Kramer and Steinberger guitars, as well as Tobias which specializes in bass guitars, Baldwin which makes pianos, Oberheim which makes effects processors and MIDI gear, and Slingerland drums.
Gibson also operates a factory in Memphis where its Custom Shop guitars are manufactured and sold, and another in Bozeman, Montana, where Gibson's acoustic guitars are made.

 Gibson's Firebird Line: A '60s Era Radical
The company's ultra-radical offerings--the original Flying V and Explorer solidbody electric models--had been commercial failures, while various conflicts with Les Paul led to the temporary discontinuation of the famous line that had helped establish Gibson as a leader in the solidbody field.
Most new Gibson guitar models are the result of a cooperative effort on the part of the company research and development staff.
Prior to the Firebird, all Gibson necks were glued on, and therefore separated from the body by a seam.

The X-plorer Studio's body is 90 percent of the classic Gibson Explorer, which makes for a more balanced, ergonomic fit with the player.
Gibson's original Flying V of 1958 was so far ahead of its time that even the first reissues, almost 10 years later, were only moderately successful.
The new Gibson Voodoo X-plorer has a lighter swamp ash body, mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard with red pearl Voodoo skull at the 5th fret, fl chrome hardware and Black Magic pickups.

Gibson Explorer '76 Solid Body Electric Guitar
Often imitated, the Explorer '76 was a product of futuristic thinking that started in the '50s when fins on autos and rockets were part of the scene.
The radical body shape of the Explorer is still going strong, especially with rock players.
The original Explorer of 1958 was more radically modernistic than its famous cousin, the Flying V. Musicians finally caught up with the Explorer in 1976, and today's Explorer revives the first reissue.

 Gibson Guitar
Gibson, like Fender, is one of the largest and best known manufacturers of acoustic and electric guitars as well as amplifiers.
During the 1920s and 1930s, the Gibson company was responsible for many innovations in guitar design, and became the leading manufacturer of arch-top guitars, paticularly the Gibson L5 model.
Although Gibson manufactures several types of stringed instruments, including mandolins, banjos, electric basses, and acoustic and Dobro guitars, they are probably best known for their electric guitars, especially the Gibson Les Paul and ES-335 models.

 eBay.co.uk Guides - Gibson Explorers
The original (now legendary) Korina Explorers from the 1958-59 period, together with the Flying V and Moderne, were too radical for their day, guitarists being a conservative crowd in terms of considering changes and new designs.
The Explorer 2 was issued in two versions; a maple and walnut laminated guitar (with either body wood on top depending upon the example in front of you), and a bound-bodied, maple-topped Explorer CMT (Curly Maple Top).
Explorer enthusiasts are growing; they have a number of high-profile endorsers, and the up/down 'pointy guitar' market seems to be starting to grow.

 Explorer Pro Review | Gibson | Reviews @ Ultimate-Guitar.Com
I'm not too sure about the guitars features, except the pickups are Gibson ceramics, very hot, the neck pickup is perfect for clean, it's a solid body, mahogany, with a flamed top, Tune-O-Matic bridge, and a rosewood fingerboard.
It's very strong, I play live with it, the finish is staying put perfectly, all of it will last, I would definitly use it without backup, but I take my Ibanez RG350DX with me, for the floyd rose, but other wise I would rely fully on this guitar.
this is good, but i prefer the original explorer the body is bigger like this one should be; because they made the body smaller on this one i find it looks out of proportion.

 Gibson X-plorer | Sweetwater.com
Gibson introduced three "futuristic" guitar models that year, the Flying V, the Explorer and the Moderne.
But Gibson certainly showed the critics that it was capable of and quite willing to break the conservative mold with these instruments, which actually owe an awful lot to late '50s automobile design.
While there weren't many Explorers sold in 1958, the guitar has been reincarnated a few times in the last four decades, most notably in 1976, which is the design used to create today's X-Plorer.

Vintage Guitar and Bass :: View topic - Mahogany Explorer?
Probably not standard on an Explorer, but there does seem to be a lot of Gibsons of that era with brass nuts.
The only mention of explorer bass woods I can find at the moment is from the 86 catalog which (as Uwe stated earlier) lists maple neck and 'American hardwood' body - which could mean we'll make them from different hardwoods depending on finish, availability or some other factor....
Gibson, at the time, was using brass nuts on everything bass (my 81 Victory has one).

The Gibson Explorer is instantly recognizable and completely unequalled in the world of unconventional guitar designs.
Gibson unveiled the Flying V, Explorer and Moderne at the 1958 NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) trade show, where they were all too successful in shocking the industry.
With the Flying V and Explorer having blazed a trail to a new level of guitar design, Gibson's next solidbody, the SG, found easy acceptance.

Gibson Explorer: Harmony Central User Reviews   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
I normally play Fenders and Rickenbackers, so buying a Gibson was a bit of a stretch for me. I have to admit that its a lot of fun to play, and very different from anything else for obvious reasons.
Visually the Explorer is a bit tricky and I had to convince myself that I really wanted one - its hard to avoid thinking of all those cheezy metal bands that have used Explorers in the past.
I hope this is not a reflection of their overal quality as I have always used Gibsons in the past mainly because of the high quality and good workmanship.

Explorer does not have neck dive,it is very well balanced.
I got to play an old Hamer '70s Explorer once (fretless, modeled after one Sting used in his Police days) but it was road-beaten and the DiMarzio (?) single pickup didn't really cut through with any bass response.
Think I saw a Gibson Explorer bass once at a vintage guitar show, but the displayer had this "HANDS OFF" look about him, so I just looked and walked away.

This was a particular model Explorer made in the late 70's to 1980 but then without warning was apparently "pulled" from the market in the middle of the night without warning.

Others say that they were just "too damn awesome dude" and Gibson decided to halt production and continue to make the bland, boring Explorers that we saw in the previous years and see again today.
